CNN: Biden Says Impeachment Trial ‘Has To’ Happen

CNN White House Correspondent Kaitlan Collins reported on Monday that President Joe Biden said a Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump “has to happen.”

Collins reported that Biden made his comments earlier on Monday during an off-camera interview with CNN.

CNN Report On Biden’s View Of Trump Trial: ‘I Think It Has To Happen’

Collins also reports that Biden does not believe enough Republicans will vote to convict the former president.

As it stands, 17 Republicans would need to join the Democrats in order to reach the two-thirds threshold to convict.

Biden had previously appeared concerned that an impeachment process might distract Democrats from his agenda, but also reportedly said there would be “a worse effect” if it did not happen.

“The Senate has changed since I was there, but it hasn’t changed that much,” Biden said.

On Monday night, House Democrats delivered the article of impeachment to the Senate, accusing Trump of inciting the riots in and around Capitol Hill on January 6.

Trump is the first president to be impeached twice, though Republicans opposed to impeachment say the fact that he’s no longer president makes the push absurd, and perhaps unconstitutional.

The trial is scheduled to start Feb. 8.

Biden Concerned Impeachment Could Affect His 100 Day Agenda

Biden’s Monday comments to CNN come in the wake of a statement the president released earlier this month in which he called the House impeachment vote “a bipartisan vote cast by members who followed the Constitution and their conscience.”

RELATED: Pelosi’s Past Comes Back To Haunt Her – She Once Praised Unionists Storming State Capitol Of Wisconsin

10 House Republicans joined the Democrats in voting to impeach.

“This nation also remains in the grip of a deadly virus and a reeling economy,” Biden said at the time.

He added, “I hope that the Senate leadership will find a way to deal with their Constitutional responsibilities on impeachment while also working on the other urgent business of this nation.”

But was Joe Biden right the first time – will Democrats’ seemingly relentless impeachment efforts distract them from getting on with the business of the nation?

Particularly when it is doubtful there would be enough Republicans to see this through?

Rand Paul Slams Impeachment ‘Farce’ That ‘Should Be Dismissed’

On Sunday, Senator Rand Paul said in an op-ed that the impeachment process against former President Donald Trump was a “farce” and called for it to be dismissed.

Paul wrote in his op-ed “Boycott Sham Impeachment” for The Hill, “The Constitution says two things about impeachment — it is a tool to remove the office holder, and it must be presided over by the chief justice of the Supreme Court.”

Sen. Paul: Trump Not To Blame For Capitol Violence

“If Justice Roberts is not presiding over this, then it is not impeachment,” Paul wrote. “This charade will be nothing more than bitter partisanship and political theater.”

According to Politico, sources in both parties “close to the impeachment trial negotiations,” claimed that Chief Justice Roberts didn’t want a role in the trial and a spokesperson for Supreme Court judge declined to comment to Politico on the matter.

Paul also said a politician merely telling a crowd to “fight to take back your country” doesn’t mean he or she provoked violence, as many have accused Trump of doing in his speech preceding the Capitol Hill attack.

“If we are to blame politicians for the most violent acts of their craziest supporters, then many of my colleagues would face some pretty harsh charges themselves,” Paul said.

Paul Revisits Bernie Supporter Shooting Republican Congressmen

The senator continued, “I’ve been shot at, assaulted and harassed by supporters of the left, including some who directly said the words of politicians moved them to this violence.”

Sen. Paul then brought up the 2017 incident in which a reported Bernie Sanders supporter shot at him and other Republicans on a baseball field while practicing for the annual congressional baseball game.

Paul wrote, “I was there at the ball field when a deranged Bernie Sanders supporter almost killed Steve Scalise and seriously wounded several others.”

“At the time, Democrats were arguing that the GOP plan for health care was ‘you get sick, then they let you die’ Paul said.

“Is it any wonder an insane left-wing gunman took that rhetoric to heart and concluded: ‘If the GOP is going to let me die then maybe I’ll just kill them first?”

‘This So-Called Impeachment Is A Farce’

Libertarian-leaning Republican Paul then ended his op-ed by denouncing the Trump impeachment as a “farce” that should be stopped.

Paul wrote, “I am more than willing to work with Democrats to find common ground on protecting civil liberties or ending some of our many foreign military interventions, but no unity or common ground will be found while Democrats continue to fight the last election.”

“This so-called impeachment is a farce and should be dismissed before it is even allowed to begin,” Paul ended.

The impeachment trial is scheduled to begin the week of February 8. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said earlier in January that he hasn’t made a decision yet on whether to vote to convict Trump.

Maxine Waters Claims Trump Will ‘Take Over Legislatures, Little Towns And Cities’ If Not Convicted

Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters claimed Sunday that former President Donald Trump would attempt “to take over legislatures, little towns and cities” if he is not convicted for insurrection.

Waters made her comments on MSNBC’s “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart.”

RELATED: Biden Accuser Tara Reade Reemerges To Say It Was ‘Unspeakably Hard To Watch The Man Who Assaulted Me’ Be Inaugurated

Waters Claims Trump ‘Paid’ The ‘Organizers Of The Insurrection’

Waters said, “I do believe he sent all of these domestic terrorists to the Capitol to take over the Capitol, and that includes not only the Proud Boys but the Oath Keepers, the QAnon, and white supremacists.”

“These people have been aligned with him” Waters insisted.

Waters then accused Trump of paying the “organizers of the insurrection.”

“One of the things I hope that will be looked at as we take this impeachment to the Senate is the fact that in his campaign for re-election, he was paying the very organizers of the insurrection that took place,” said Waters.

After the violence at the Capitol in early January, Waters also claimed that President Trump was “capable” of “starting a civil war.”

Waters Demands Trump Conviction

“The names are right there” she continued. “The amount of money that he paid to them, it is shown in the last report,” the Democrat said. “More of it is going to show up in the next report that they have to do.”

“I think it is very clear” Waters said. “We cannot afford to allow this president to leave here without being impeached and, you know, absolutely convicted.”

She further explained why she believes the Senate must impeach Trump, claiming that Trump would use taxpayer money to organize his supporters.

Waters continued, “We cannot allow him to leave and have all of the resources of the taxpayers to have not only money to hire staff, but to hire security, and money to organize with, because he will continue.”

RELATED: Joy Behar Comes Unglued – Says Trump ‘Made It His Business For Four Years To Rape This Country’

Then Waters made her wild claim about Trump somehow being so influential over parts of the U.S. population that he will be able to control small towns and local governments.

“He now knows, he has a population” Waters said adding that “he’s going to expand that.”

“He will be attempting to take over legislatures, little towns and cities and he doesn’t give a darn about the Constitution and so our democracy is at stake,” Waters claimed.

“We must convict him, and we must take away his power” she finished.

If President Trump were convicted by the Senate and barred from holding political office, it would do nothing to stop him from organizing or politicking as a private citizen.

Mitt Romney Suggests Trump Impeachment Necessary For ‘Unity In Our Country’

Republican Senator Mitt Romney suggested Sunday that impeaching former President Donald Trump could bring national unity.

The “Never Trump” Senator made his comments on “Fox News Sunday” with host Chris Wallace.

Watch the interview below.

Romney Argues Senate Trial Necessary For Unity

Wallace asked Romney, “Senator, do you support holding this impeachment trial, and what do you think the rules should be on the length of the trial and whether or not to call witnesses?”

Romney replied, “Well, we’re certainly going to have a trial. I wish that weren’t necessary, with the president’s conduct with regard to the call to the secretary of state in Georgia as well as the incitation towards the insurrection that led to the attack on the Capital calls for a trial.”

Then the anti-Trump Republican suggested that the impeachment could bring more unity for the U.S.

“If we are going to have unity in our country, I think it’s important to recognize the need for accountability, for truth, and justice,” Romney said.

Romney: ‘Pretty Clear’ Trump Spent A Year Trying To ‘Corrupt The Election’

He added, “So I think there will be a trial, and I hope it goes as quickly as possible, but that’s up to the council on both sides.”

Romney said it has been “pretty clear” over the last year and Trump had been trying to corrupt the election.

“I think it’s pretty clear that over the last year or so there has been an effort to corrupt the election of the United States and it was not by President Biden, it was by President Trump and that corruption we saw with regards to the conduct in Ukraine as well as the call to Secretary of state Raffensperger as well as the in citation to insurrection.”

Romney has a long history of anti-Trump sentiment.

Romney was the only Republican Senator to vote to convict President Trump during the first impeachment trial.

In 2016, Romney famously gave a “Never Trump” speech when it became clear that Trump was likely to win the Republican nomination for President.

RELATED: Joy Behar Comes Unglued – Says Trump ‘Made It His Business For Four Years To Rape This Country’

The Utah senator finished his interview with Wallace by saying Trump provoked an attack on American democracy.

“I mean, this is obviously very serious and an attack on the very foundation of our democracy, and it is something that has to be considered and resolved,” Romney added.

Rapper Lil Wayne Sends Thanks To President Trump For Presidential Pardon

On Thursday, rapper Lil Wayne thanked Donald Trump for including him on the list of 100-plus pardons issued as the former president exited the White House this week.

Lil Wayne thanked him for “recognizing that I have so much more to give to my family, my art, and my community.”

Lil Wayne: ‘I Want To Thank President Trump’

The Grammy Award winner and famous Green Bay Packers fan sent a grateful message to President Trump.

“I want to thank President Trump for recognizing that I have so much more to give to my family, my art, and my community. I also want to thank @bradfordcohen for working so diligently to secure another chance for me. Love!”

The rapper signed his message using his full legal name, Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.

Wayne had praised Trump’s “Platinum Plan for Black Americans” during Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign, an effort to revitalize and create job growth for black communities.

In November 2020, the rapper was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon for flying with a firearm and ammunition.

Trump Also Pardoned Rapper Kodak Black

Lil Wayne’s attorney, Howard Srebnick, told the Associated Press at the time, “Carter is charged with possessing a gold-plated handgun in his luggage on a private plane.”

“There is no allegation that he ever fired it, brandished it, used it or threatened to use it,” Srebnick added. “There is no allegation that he is a dangerous person.”

In October, Wayne said that he had a “great meeting” with Trump and praised him for being a Republican who had actually made outreach efforts to black Americans.

Trump also commuted the sentence of Rapper Kodak Black, who remained in federal prison for “making a false statement to buy a firearm.”

Black thanked Trump on Twitter.

“I Want To Thank The President @RealDonaldTrump For His Commitment To Justice Reform And Shortening My Sentence. I Also Want To Thank Everyone For Their Support And Love. It Means More Than You Will Ever Know. I Want To Continue Giving Back, Learning And Growing,” the rapper tweeted.

Report: Trump Wants To Create New ‘Patriot Party’

The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday evening that President Trump is interested in creating a new third party once he leaves office.

The reported name? The ‘Patriot Party.’

RELATED: Hillary Clinton, Pelosi Push Conspiracy Theory Suggesting Trump Updated Putin About The Capitol Riots, Demand 9/11-Style Investigation

Aides Claim Trump Has Mentioned Creating New Party

The Journal cited “people familiar with the matter” who say Trump has discussed creating a “Patriot Party” and that “several aides and other people close to him” have said the same.

Trump has a widespread appeal with both independent voters and those who have been politically apathetic, meaning their loyalty to the Republican Party is primarily situational.

Give them Republicans they like – Donald Trump – and they might vote Republican.

Give them Republicans they don’t like – Mitch McConnell, Mitt Romney, and the entire GOP establishment – and there is a good chance they won’t vote for the Republican candidate.

Mitch McConnell’s Actions Could Be Deciding Factor

Mitch McConnell should think long and hard about whether he wants to push impeachment.

Trump has feuded with Republican lawmakers in Washington in recent months, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell at the top of that list.

On Tuesday, McConnell accused Trump of supposedly inciting the January 6 Capitol Hill attack and said moving on with impeachment in the Senate was a matter of conscience.

The Wall Street Journal notes that it isn’t entirely clear if Trump was merely talking out loud about creating a new third party or actually serious about putting in the work that such an effort would take.

Could Trump Make A Third Party Viable?

Third parties in the United States have struggled historically, with Ross Perot’s Reform Party making the strongest showing in modern presidential politics, in 1992.

POLL: Would You Join Trump's Patriot Party?

By voting, you agree to receive email communication from The Political Insider. Click HERE for more information.

That third party effort did well in part because it had a strong personality leading it in Mr. Perot.

One can say many things about Donald Trump, but most would agree – friend or foe – that he is a strong personality.

A new party led by Donald Trump could cripple the Republican Party because he might be able to attract countless Americans who would have otherwise voted Republican.

In pushing for impeachment, Mitch McConnell and GOP leadership should be careful what they wish for.

If Republicans Put America First, They’ll Remove Liz Cheney, Not Donald Trump

As the House voted to impeach President Donald Trump on Wednesday, much praise was given to Congresswoman Liz Cheney for being one of the ten Republicans who voted to impeach.

Cheney is the #3 Republican in the House, which added weight to her stance.

But it was her father Dick Cheney and his legacy – a legacy she clearly plans to continue – that is arguably the most impeachable offense in American history.

President Trump: Iraq War Was The ‘Worst Single Mistake Ever Made’

President Trump has been at war with the Bush faction of the GOP since he announced his campaign for President in 2015.

Trump was right when he called President George W. Bush and Dick Cheney’s war in Iraq the “worst single mistake” in U.S. history.

“The worst single mistake ever made in the history of our country: going into the Middle East, by President Bush,” Trump told The Hill in 2018.

Trump added, “Obama may have gotten (U.S. soldiers) out wrong, but going in is, to me, the biggest single mistake made in the history of our country.”

Why was it such a colossal mistake? President Trump had an answer for that too.

Cheney Unapologetic About Iraq War, Bush Foreign Policy

“Because we spent $7 trillion in the Middle East,” Trump said. “Now if you wanna fix a window some place they say, ‘oh gee, let’s not do it.’ Seven trillion, and millions of lives — you know, ‘cause I like to count both sides. Millions of lives,” Trump explained.

“To me, it’s the worst single mistake made in the history of our country,” Trump reiterated.

This is a charge President Trump would repeat throughout both presidential campaigns and during his time in the White House.

Today, a majority of Americans agree with Trump on the wrongness of the Iraq War, including military veterans.

But what does Liz Cheney think? She agrees with her father who still says “I was right about Iraq.”

Unbelievable.

But Trump’s radical break with the Establishment’s foreign policy isn’t limited to Iraq.

Just weeks ago, Cheney and the Democrats worked hand-in-hand to block President Trump from removing troops from Afghanistan, where we have been mired for 20 years.

In October of 2019, Democrats (and many Republicans) voted overwhelmingly to condemn President Trump’s effort to withdraw troops from Barack Obama’s war in Syria.

Remember when Democrats at least pretended to be anti-war, when Bush was President?

RELATED: Ben Sasse And The GOP Aim To Purge Trumpism, Return To Bush-Era

‘America First’ vs. Neoconservative Ideology

But despite all the establishment praise being given to Cheney and a handful of anti-Trump Republicans this week, it is the “America First” foreign policy of Donald Trump that has completely flipped the script on this front in the GOP.

Republican members of Congress like Rand Paul, Matt Gaetz, Thomas Massie, and many others are staunchly opposed to needlessly starting another war like Iraq, and Trump’s position on this issue has largely helped solidify this sentiment among Republican voters.

Donald Trump Jr. has helped too.

Liz Cheney Deserves To Be Removed More Than President Trump

Congresswoman Cheney will continue to pursue a foreign policy agenda like her father’s – one that puts America and our soldiers last.

She will find a more willing partner in a President Biden than she did with President Trump.

If there was an administration that deserved impeachment, it was Bush-Cheney for the disastrous foreign policy they foisted upon America – one that was continued by Barack Obama.

We are still dealing with the repercussions of Obama (and Hillary Clinton’s) disasters in Libya and Syria.

President Trump set a new course for America. Along the way, he secured four Middle East peace deals

The Republican Party and Congress would do well to remove those who would take us back to the disastrous foreign policy of the past, and continue to build upon the Trump path to peace.

Democrat Rep. David Cicilline Pulls Down Mask To Sneeze Into His Hand

On Wednesday, you could clearly see Democrat Congressman David Cicilline of Rhode Island pull down his mask to sneeze into his hand.

This happened on the House floor during the debate over impeaching President Donald Trump for allegedly inciting the crowd that attacked the Capitol last week.

Democrat Congressman Cicilline Ignores COVID Safety

Cicilline is one of the impeachment managers appointed by Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Sitting behind Democratic Congresswoman Yvette Clark, who was advocating to impeach Trump, you could clearly see Cicilline pull down his mask and sneezed into his hand.

After he sneezes, the congressman pulls his mask back up.

Democrats Demand Fines For Not Wearing Masks

More than a few Democrats have called for fines for members of Congress who do not wear a mask while on the floor.

Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal recently announced she had COVID-19, blamed it on GOP members, and declared that there should be “serious fines” for any member who refuse to wear one.

Jayapal said, “Additionally, any Member who refuses to wear a mask should be immediately removed from the floor by the Sergeant at Arms. This is not a joke.”

“Our lives and our livelihoods are at risk, and anyone who refuses to wear a mask should be fully held accountable for endangering our lives because of their selfish idiocy,” Jayapal claimed.

Wear A Mask Or Pay A Fine

The Hill reported Tuesday, “House Democrats on Tuesday will adopt new rules slapping fines on any lawmakers who refuse to wear masks on the chamber floor.”

“The new guidelines will hit offending lawmakers with a $500 fine on the first offense and $2,500 on the second, to be deducted from the lawmakers’ pay, according to a senior Democratic aide,” The Hill noted.

Republican Congressman Thomas Massie responded by asking if the fines were constitutional.

“How does this not violate the 27th amendment which states: “No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.”

Legal or not, don’t expect any penalties for Democratic Congressman David Cicilline.

GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger: Impeachment ‘Was Not A Hard Decision,’ Didn’t Need To Look For Evidence

Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger voted to impeach President Donald Trump on Wednesday for allegedly inciting the attack on the Capitol last week.

During an interview on “PBS NewsHour,” Kinzinger said that the decision to impeach President Trump wasn’t a particularly difficult decision given that “the evidence was not something we had to go discover. It was brought right to us on the 6th.”

Watch the video below.

Rep. Kinzinger Claims ‘It Was Hard To Go Through With It’

Kinzinger said, “Truthfully, it was not a hard decision. I mean, it was hard to go through with it.”

“Because, bottom line is, you’re impeaching a president a second time,” Kinzinger said. “It’s never something that should be easily done.”

But the evidence was no problem for Kinzinger.

“But I think the evidence was not something we had to go discover,” the Republican said. “It was brought right to us on the 6th.”

Kinzinger also claimed he had predicted the violence.

“Of course, I had predicted violence for weeks leading up to the 6th, but the 6th was the culmination, hopefully the culmination, of that violence coming to here,” Kinzinger said, referring to Washington, DC.

RELATED: ABC Quietly Edits Story That Claims Republican Movement Should Be ‘Cleansed’ Of Trump Supporters

Kinzinger: ‘If That Is Not Impeachable, I Don’t Know What Is’

The GOP congressman then cited the Constitution as justification for his vote.

“And, look, when you have the president of the United States, the Article 2 part of the Constitution, incite and send and ignite a mob to attack the Article 1 branch, that is nothing short of an insurrection,” he said.

The Congressman didn’t provide any evidence of how President Trump incited the mob.

Kinzinger added, “I think most people can look at that and know that the president has both built the foundation and executed the command to do it.”

“And if that is not impeachable, I don’t know what is,” Rep. Kinzinger added.

Kinzinger Is A Longtime Trump Critic

Kinzinger has long been a Trump critic. He was also one of the early recipients of the Steele Dossier, the now-discredited document that supposedly showed President colluded with Russia to win the 2016 presidential election.

Kinzinger and the chief of staff to House Speaker Paul Ryan both received the Steele dossier, according to a court memo.

The Political Insider reported in December 2018, “The judge handling the case filed a document that stated that Christopher Steele, the dossier author, provided at least one memo from the dossier to Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger and Jonathan Burks, a longtime Ryan aide.”

“Steele gave Report 166 to Kramer, an unnamed senior British security official, Ms. Wallender [sic] at the NSC, Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), and House Speaker Paul Ryan’s Chief of Staff, John Burks,’ wrote Judge Ursula Ungaro, who ruled in favor of BuzzFeed in a defamation lawsuit filed by a Russian businessmen identified in Report 166, which Steele produced on Dec. 13, 2016.”

Kinzinger also considered running as an independent against Trump in 2016, when it became clear Trump would be the Republican nominee for President.

CNN’s Jake Tapper: GOP Needs ‘Political Exorcist,’ Republicans ‘Clearly Have Lost Their Minds’

After the House voted to impeach President Donald Trump for a second time on Wednesday, CNN anchor Jake Tapper said that Republicans “are in a state of denial about the fact that he incited this riot” and believes the GOP needs a political ‘exorcism.’

Of the impeachment, Tapper said, “It is the most bipartisan impeachment in American history, far exceeding the number of people in the opposing party who voted to impeach Clinton or Johnson. So I do think it is significant.”

Tapper has been very outspoken about his views lately.

Tapper Blasts Republicans Who ‘Believe All Of His Lies’

“On the other hand, it is still a vast minority of the House Republican Caucus, most of whom are still devoted to President Trump,” Tapper continued.

Tapper added, “Most of whom are in a state of denial about the fact that he incited this riot, this terrorist attack on the Capitol that put their own lives at risk, which is stunning in and of itself.”

RELATED: ABC Quietly Edits Story That Claims Republican Movement Should Be ‘Cleansed’ Of Trump Supporters

He continued, “You know, I know a number of people, and I know there are a lot of Americans out there who have seen, are friends with or married to or related to people who have drunk the Trump Kool-aid, who have become radicalized by this president, who believe all of his lies, despite the evidence in front of their faces.”

Then Tapper told CNN Chief Political Correspondent Dana Bash that Republicans are losing their minds.

“Dana, it’s just —it’s a shocking thing to behold when you know people like this. And it’s also shocking, like I don’t know about you, but there are Republican members of Congress I know who clearly have lost their minds, who just will not accept reality when it comes to the facts about Donald Trump.”

Bash replied, “We have seen people like Liz Cheney and Mitch McConnell try to show the people who respect them where to go and lead them there.”

It’s interesting to note who CNN thinks the “good” Republicans are – Establishment neoconservatives Liz Cheney and Mitch McConnell.

“Then there are so many others who are following the pack,” Bash said. “Even though the pack is going in the wrong direction. The pack is following the lies.”

Tapper chimed in, “Like Kevin McCarthy.”

Tapper continued, “Marjorie Taylor Greene, the crazy congresswoman from Georgia, who is anti-Semitic and supports QAnon and said a plane didn’t hit the Pentagon on 9/11, she actually tweeted during this, a week after the terrorist attack, that Democrats are the enemy of the people.”

RELATED: Boston Marathon Bomber Sues For $250k, Claims Prison Guards Took His Hat And Bandana

Tapper: GOP Needs ‘Political Exorcist’

That’s when Tapper said maybe an “exorcist” needed to intervene.

“I don’t know if there’s such a job as a political exorcist but they need to do something to fix the Republican Party to get this demon out,” Tapper said.

It is doubtful that Republican voters are going to take CNN’s advice on who to support going forward.

It’s also interesting to note that anti-Trump journalists haven’t figured out that the more they hysterically demonize Donald Trump, the more Republicans are going to support him.

Conservatives view how the media treats different Republicans as a test. If CNN loves Liz Cheney, for example, chances are, she’s not someone who conservatives can trust to fight for their interests.
