Democratic senators urge Biden to use 14th Amendment to raise debt limit

A group of Democratic senators led by Sen. Tina Smith (Minn.) are circulating a letter urging President Biden to invoke his constitutional authority under the 14th Amendment to raise the nation’s debt limit without having to pass legislation through Congress.  

These senators say the spending reforms that Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has demanded in exchange for raising the debt limit are unacceptable and that Biden should circumvent Republican lawmakers by raising the debt limit unilaterally, something that has never been done before and would almost certainly be challenged in court.  

“We write to urgently request that you prepare to exercise your authority under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which clearly states: ‘the validity of the public debt of the United States...shall not be questioned.’ Using this authority would allow the United States to continue to pay its bills on-time, without delay, preventing a global economic catastrophe,” they write in a letter currently circulating through the Senate Democratic conference. 

The signatories on the letter so far include Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.).

The lawmakers warned they will not accept any concessions attached to the debt limit that cut federal assistance for low-income Americans without raising taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations.  

“We cannot reach a budget agreement that increases the suffering of millions of Americans who are already living in desperation. At a time of massive wealth and income inequality, we must ask billionaires and large corporations who are doing phenomenally well to start paying their fair share of taxes,” they wrote in response to proposals by House Republicans to increase work requirements for people who rely on Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. 

The Democratic senators warned that Republican proposals in a House-passed bill to raise the debt limit could push as many as 21 million people off of Medicaid and deny nutrition assistance to 1.7 million women, infants and children. 

The lawmakers also blustered at House Republicans’ demands to attach major permitting reforms for fossil-fuel attraction projects to debt-limit legislation.  

“We also cannot allow these budget negotiations to undermine the historic clean energy and environmental justice investments made by Congress and your administration by allowing fossil fuel companies to unleash a flood of dirty energy projects that will worsen the climate crisis and disproportionately impact frontline communities. We must continue the transition from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy,” they wrote.  

Merkley said the letter is intended to assure Biden that he will have support on Capitol Hill if he decides to use the 14th Amendment to raise the debt limit in the absence of a deal with McCarthy.  

“It’s important because Kevin McCarthy has two main requests: attack ordinary, working families across America by cutting the foundations for health care, housing, education and good-paying jobs, and unleash fossil fuels on America. And both of those are absolutely unacceptable,” he said.  

"I want the president to see that he has the support in the Senate to use the 14th Amendment," he said. "He has support to say no to outrageous demands from the radical right."

Treasury Department Secretary Janet Yellen, however, warned last week that invoking the 14th Amendment would be a "constitutional crisis" and would spur a legal battle. 

Lawmakers furious at Democratic leaders after stock trading ban stalls

Anger is boiling over at House Democratic leadership for failing to deliver on a bill to ban members of Congress from trading stocks — a key priority for voters on both sides of the aisle — ahead of the midterm elections.  

Democratic leaders unveiled draft legislation to tackle the issue Tuesday, just days before Congress was set to leave for an extended recess. That left lawmakers little time to review the bill or offer changes, such as closing loopholes that critics say make the bill toothless, dooming its chances of a floor vote. 

Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) on Friday issued a scathing statement, accusing Democratic leaders of slow-walking her own stock trading proposal — introduced two years ago with bipartisan backing — and ultimately offering a more complicated bill that was designed to fail. 

“This moment marks a failure of House leadership — and it’s yet another example of why I believe that the Democratic Party needs new leaders in the halls of Capitol Hill, as I have long made known,” Spanberger said in her statement.  

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told reporters Friday that the bill didn’t come to the floor because it didn’t have the votes to pass.  

The delay is a momentous setback for the stock trading reform effort, which drew a rare confluence of support from an overwhelming majority of Republican and Democratic voters.  

Public scrutiny of lawmakers’ trades intensified when Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) unloaded much of his portfolio after attending a private briefing on the devastating impacts of COVID-19 at the start of the pandemic. Pelosi, whose husband is a prolific trader, also drew backlash when she said she wouldn’t support a ban on stock trading in Congress, a position she later reversed. 

“Passing a stock trading bill before the midterms would have been a good faith sign to the voters that Congress takes its responsibility to the public interest seriously,” said Danielle Caputo, an ethics lawyer at the Campaign Legal Center. “And so obviously, that's disappointing.” 

The Combatting Financial Conflicts of Interests in Government Act, spearheaded by Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) at the request of Pelosi, aims to prevent insider trading among members of Congress, federal government officials and Supreme Court justices. 

The bill is meant to stop insider trading by making officials put any stocks they own into what’s called a blind trust, whereby the stocks are handed over to a third party that manages them without their owner’s knowledge. 

But critics of the bill say that it contains a loophole that allows officials to get out of this requirement. 

“The problem is that the bill allows people to create a trust that they can claim is blind and diversified, and yet it doesn’t actually have to meet the criteria that are currently in the law for it to officially be a blind trust,” said Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette, an advocate with The Project on Government Oversight (POGO), a nonprofit watchdog organization.  

Congressional ethics committees, notorious for failing to hold lawmakers accountable for violating existing ethics rules, would sign off on the blind trusts under the proposal.  

“It’s basically a fake blind trust,” he said. “We don’t have that much trust in what the ethics committee is going to do because they’re notoriously weak in doing anything that’s particularly restrictive or robust around what happens internally.” 

Critics of Democratic leaders’ approach say that the stock trading bill should have stuck to the legislative branch, and that including ethics reforms to the judiciary and federal government only complicated its chances of passage. Those changes could have come in future bills, they said. 

Lawmakers complained this week that the Lofgren bill was not crafted with input from many rank-and-file lawmakers, particularly Republicans.  

“This is a complex issue requiring thought, debate, amendment and a full airing in committee to build as much bipartisan agreement as possible rather than the normal cram-down from the top that permeates literally everything we do,” Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), who partnered with Spanberger on a stock trading bill, said in a statement Wednesday. 

House Judiciary Committee member Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) said in an interview that he suspects that many members of his committee haven’t had time to properly review the legislation. 

“I would suppose there are many members who have not actually read the legislation. And it’s certainly an important enough issue that we need to take adequate time to deliberate on it. We know that stock trading by members of Congress and by judges — Article III judges — is unacceptable,” he said, referring to judges who are nominated by the president and can only be removed from office with impeachment proceedings. 

A recent analysis by The New York Times found that one-fifth of U.S. lawmakers traded financial assets in industries that relate to their work on government committees in recent years.  

A 2012 law called the STOCK Act forbids members of Congress from using insider information when buying and selling stocks, but watchdogs say violations of the law are common. 

“We keep seeing STOCK Act violations,” POGO’s Hedtler-Gaudette said. “We see them time and time again. And they’re not even assessing penalties on the people who are violating the STOCK Act.” 

The proposed stock trading ban in the House is one of several bills now being debated in the Senate from lawmakers including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.). 

Upon hearing the news of the stalled bill Friday, Hawley tweeted, "Pathetic. This should be a slam dunk."

"Congress AND their spouses from owning stock. But no. Pelosi & Company won’t give up the $$$$," he continued.

The proposals from Hawley and Ossoff allow for stocks to be put into blind trusts, while the bipartisan measure from Warren and Daines is more strict and requires that stocks be sold off outright. 

Supporters are still hopeful that lawmakers can finish a stock trading bill in a lame duck session after the election. But they note that there will be less pressure on lawmakers to appease voters, and Congress will already have its hands full with a slew of legislative priorities, including a government spending bill.

Democrats Support School Choice, But Only For Themselves, Not For You

The COVID-19 pandemic was a horrific thing. Millions died, businesses were shut down, many of them closed for good, and because of those lockdowns of society, American children lost precious education time.

But one good thing that came from the pandemic was the ability of parents to look over their kids’ shoulders to see what was going on in the classroom.

They got a first hand look at what was being taught, but also, what was not being taught.

Private vs. Public Schools

Proponents of school choice say that things like school vouchers level the playing field and give children the opportunity to go to a better school.

Ideally, dollars can be used for charter schools, homeschooling, and other alternatives to public schools.

Opponents like the ACLU and teachers unions, which heavily donate to the Democrat Party, argue that taxpayer dollars should not go to funding private schools. Most Democrats are largely opposed to school choice.

But as is so often the case, what they say and what they do are two very different things. While Democrat elected officials deny low-income kids a chance at a better education, the nation’s pricy private schools are filled with the children of those officials.

OK For Me But Not For Thee

So who are these politicians that feel their children are entitled to a better education than yours just because they have “Rep.,” Senator,” or even “President” in front of their name and more zeroes in their bank account? Well, they are exactly who you might think they are.

Bill and Hillary Clinton sent daughter Chelsea to the exclusive and pricy Sidwell Friends school. Hillary flip-flopped on school choice.

Malia and Sasha Obama also attended school at Sidwell, while their father, President Barack Obama, opposed school choice.

President Joe Biden attended the also-exclusive Catholic prep school Archmere Academy in Delaware, and also sent sons Beau and Hunter there. Tuition runs in the $30,000 range.

Biden has expressly attacked the notion of school choice:

Vice President Kamala Harris’ stepchildren attended Wildwood School, also very private and very elite. Tuition fees there will set parents back roughly $44,000. As a Senator, Harris voted against Trump Education Secretary Betsy Devos’ confirmation as Secretary specifically because she supported school vouchers.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attended an all-girls private Catholic high school growing up in Baltimore, and sent her son Paul to Episcopal High School in Virginia, a boarding school that runs almost $65,000 in tuition a year.

Pelosi voted against the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results Reauthorization Act in 2015.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren sent her son to a private school beginning when he was in the fifth grade. In 2019, she released an education plan that was staunchly anti-school choice, including ending school choice programs that largely assist low-income families.

Fighting Back

Some parents, with the help of Republican Governors like Ron DeSantis of Florida, are fighting back against the elite hypocrisy. In May of 2021, DeSantis signed HB 7045. The bill makes more children eligible for school choice scholarships.

Once again, almost on cue, Florida Senate Democrats opposed the bill. In a statement, they stated, “By signing this bill into law, Gov. DeSantis is taking Floridians’ hard-earned tax dollars and diverting them out of public schools.” 

Well, yes, that’s the idea.

DeSantis responded saying the funds are “not going to any institution, it’s going to the parents, to give them the ability to make decisions about their children’s education.”

Parents will get to make a statement in November about what they think about Democrats who vote to deny their children the same education Democrats insist upon for theirs.

Warren: We Need to Start Impeachment Proceedings For AG Barr

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren is calling on the House to commence impeachment proceedings if Attorney General Bill Barr does not willingly resign.

Barr has been the subject of scorn after the Department of Justice opted – rightfully – to reduce the amount of jail time requested by federal prosecutors for Roger Stone, a former associate of President Trump.

The DOJ, independently of the President’s own complaints, sought reduction of the “extreme” sentencing request of nine years.

The left has wantonly drawn a line between a tweet from Trump calling the recommendation of nine years to be a “miscarriage of justice” and Barr’s actions in taking charge of a case that had gone off the rails.

As former Rep. Trey Gowdy notes, “There are child pornographers, people who rob banks who do not get nine years.”

Still, the chain of events led four career prosecutors to quit the case after the DOJ revealed their plans.

Now, Warren is demanding Barr either resign or face impeachment.

Warren: Barr Has to Go

In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Warren suggested she was so distraught over Barr’s actions that she didn’t even want to discuss the election. You know, the one she’s embarrassingly floundering in right now.

“I have to say I know everybody wants to talk about the horse race, but the thing that is really getting to me right now is what’s going on over at the Justice Department,” claimed Warren.

“The whole notion that we have people in our Justice Department resigning because Donald Trump’s inappropriate influence and the attorney general overturning a sentencing of Donald Trump’s cronies,” she lamented.

He’s not overturning a sentencing, he’s overturning a recommendation of sentencing, a vastly different accusation from Ms. Warren.

“You know, right in front of our eyes, we are watching a descent into authoritarianism,” she claimed without evidence. “And this just seems like a moment to me everybody should be speaking up.”

More Democrats ARE Speaking Up

With the group-think paranoia gripping the Democrat party today, the notion that Warren’s call for resignation or impeachment is a novel one is laughable.

“Senate Democrats have called on Attorney General William Barr to resign or face impeachment,” Yahoo News reported, “after President Donald Trump appeared to confirm that Barr had intervened in the case against the president’s longtime friend Roger Stone.”

Of course, that’s a garbage assessment by Yahoo, as the President merely congratulated the attorney general for “taking charge.” There is zero evidence that Barr actually intervened on Trump’s behalf.

Regardless, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) told NBC News that Barr has “no choice” but to resign because he’s “acting simply as a henchman of the president.”

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has demanded an investigation.

Gowdy, a former House Oversight Committee Chair, opined that calls for Barr’s resignation are the “dumbest damn thing I’ve ever heard.”

Calls for impeachment, we’re assuming, are even dumber.

Former House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy blasted Democrats demanding the resignation of Attorney General Bill Barr, calling it the “dumbest damn thing (he’s) ever heard.”

The left has been in quite a tizzy after President Trump lashed out at federal prosecutors via Twitter for recommending an excessive prison sentence for former associate Roger Stone.

The Department of Justice earlier this week revealed that they would seek a reduction of the “extreme” sentencing request – nine years – setting off a firestorm of controversy that culminated in four career prosecutors quitting the case one by one.

The issue seems to be a matter of timing. The announcement was made after Trump’s tweet, giving the impression that Barr and the DOJ were reacting to the comments.

Gowdy says none of it is true.

He’s Seen Some Pretty Dumb Things

The former Representative from South Carolina has certainly seen some dumb things during his career, but this one apparently takes the cake. The argument is two-fold.

First, Gowdy agrees with the President that Stone’s sentence is beyond the pale.

“There are child pornographers, people who rob banks who do not get nine years,” he noted before advising that a sentence of two or three years would be more appropriate.

Second, he explains that there is roughly a zero percent chance Barr was swayed by the President’s comments.

“I can tell you this: Bill Barr was aware of this recommendation before President Trump ever tweeted a single syllable, a single character,” said Gowdy. “So the notion that Barr was somehow motivated to move because of this tweet is just factually wrong.”

“The notion that Barr should resign is about the dumbest damn thing I’ve ever heard,” Gowdy added.

Barr Is Fully Within His Rights

To absolutely nobody’s surprise, Democrats, permanently housed in their perpetual outrage echo chamber, are using the DOJ’s actions as their latest effort to force an administration member out of office.

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal demanded Barr step down on Wednesday. The House Judiciary Committee promised to interrogate him over his handling of the sentencing during a hearing in late March.

Failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton accused Trump and his administration of operating like a “failed-state fascist.”

There has even been talk of more articles of impeachment.

“I can tell you this: Bill Barr was aware of this recommendation before President Trump ever tweeted a single syllable, a single character,” explained Gowdy. “So the notion that Barr was somehow motivated to move because of this tweet is just factually wrong.”

And while the former Rep. wishes Trump – or any other President – would cease weighing in on ongoing investigations, he concluded that he was well within his rights to commute Stone’s sentence or pardon him, should he so desire.

“He could do it [pardon Stone] by tweet tonight,” insisted Gowdy. “He’s the head of the executive branch and people have a chance in November if they want a different one.”

Imagine the outrage when President Trump announces Stone’s pardon via tweet. That will be about the “dumbest damned thing you’ll ever see.”

Bernie Sanders Thrives On Young Voters Not Educated On The History And Consequences Of Socialism

All of you young people need to remember that when you vote for people who want to give what we have away, loan forgiveness, Medicare for All, increased welfare, open borders, etc., all come at a price for someone.

Sooner or later, YOU are the ones who will have to pay for it all. Congress and the President cannot give anything away without first taking it from someone else. That someone else is YOU. Think about the things you are voting for and the costs.

Sen. Bernie Sanders is looking for young voters who haven’t been taught the history and consequences of socialism. If they think forgiving their school loan debt will improve their financial situation, wait until retirement.

Be very scared of people who cannot tell you how they are going to pay for something and if they say tax the rich listen to those of us who know. The rich will leave. There are plenty of Caribbean islands willing to take every one of our rich people and not tax them at all. You only need to look to states like NY and CA to understand the problems with many of these programs.

Many billionaires in NY have moved their residency to places like FL. Also, providing illegals with driver’s license has screwed hundreds of thousands of NY residents because now the Federal Gov’t, and rightfully so, have said they will no longer accept the NY state driver’s license and other things like global entry. This stuff has real impacts – like 30,000 truckers no longer being able to speed through the US border in Canada.

Free SUNY tuition has made those schools impossible to get into for anyone who wanted an affordable education but had slightly more than the amount you need for free education. Every day, working-class people are being screwed over. Look at the homeless problem in CA. Bernie doesn’t have any solutions for any of this stuff that will work.

We now live in a ‘Post-Democrat Party Era.’ Perhaps their voters may not realize this yet, but the outside world has seen their demise openly on display this week.

  • Iowa Caucus chaos;
  • Pres. Trump acquittal;
  • Rep. Nancy Pelosi temper tantrum;
  • Michael Bloomberg buying the DNC to change his Nevada rules;
  • Expulsion of CIA insiders from the National Security Council;
  • Democrat House members who refused to stand for Tuskegee airman;
  • Mean-spirited Democrats who refused to clap for a grammar school girl;
  • 20 to 30% of Trump rallies are made up of registered Democrats;
  • Trump raises $100 million war chest during impeachment,
  • Gallup now polls Trump higher than Obama, etc.

This is a complete collapse of the Democrat Party. The DNC’s (and their corporate handlers) only option now is to take over the nomination regardless if it heaps great contempt upon the Democrat voters.

The DNC has already said they do not want Bernie Sanders, but they allowed him to run on their party platform. Bernie is pulling the wool over some, but I hope the masses will realize there is no such thing as a free lunch. His plan will raise taxes to an ungodly amount. Is that free?

Here’s something that I have been wondering. If America is so broken, how come, Bernie, Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, and the others didn’t fix it while they were already in office? How come they can’t fix America unless they are elected President?

Name one thing Bernie has done during his time in office, because I can name at least 10 Trump promised to deliver on and did in just three years.

Take a long serious look at these Democratic politicians, whom many have been in politics for a long time, and ask yourselves these questions. What contributions have they made that improved the lives of Americans, what have they done with their time in serving the American people, and is one of them capable of doing half of what Pres. Trump has already done in improving our lives and serving the American people.

It’s only fair that the people with the least life experience, inherit the mess they voted for. The sad thing is, Sanders won’t be around to answer for the mess he’s left them with.

Warren Describes Pence As A ‘Dog’ During New Hampshire Campaign Rally

A campaign rally for Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-MA., got a little out of hand on Sunday when she resorted to name-calling, describing Vice President Mike Pence as a “dog.”

During Warren’s rally in Lebanon, New Hampshire, one voter asked the senator if she whispers to her dog Bailey, “Who is going to be my Mike Pence? Who is going to look at me with adoring eyes?”

“I already have a dog,” Warren replied as the audience burst into laughter.

Democrats have since been praising Warren for the insult, saying that it shows she’s the perfect person to take on President Donald Trump.

“She’s absolutely quick witted, she’s funny, she’s sharp, this is a woman that managed to get herself out of her, um, out of Oklahoma into college on a debate scholarship,” Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) told MSNBC. “When it comes time to go toe to toe with Donald Trump, Elizabeth has the ability to think on her feet, she has the depth of policy knowledge, she has the courage and the quick wit, to absolutely defeat Donald Trump in those debates and make the strongest possible contrast.”

After calling Pence a dog, Warren went on to describe who her ideal vice president would be, adding that she wants someone “who is going to be in the fight” with her.

“I want smart people. … I want people who have ideas. I want people who have worked in the fields,” she continued, according to The Hill. “I want people who believe that they can be part of putting government on the side of our citizens instead of on the sides of giant corporations.”

Given the fact that she’s currently polling in fourth place in New Hampshire, however, it’s wishful thinking for Warren to even be considering who she might want as a Vice President. Perhaps she should focus a little more on winning over voters, and a little less on insulting members of the current administration.

Stephen King Wants Warren to “Open a Large Can of Whup-Ass on Trump”

The novelist Stephen King said that he was backing Elizabeth Warren in the Democratic primaries, and wants to see her “open a large can of whup-ass” on President Trump.

“I’m Pulling for Elizabeth Warren”

“I’ll support and work for any Democrat who wins the nomination, but I’m pulling for Elizabeth Warren,” Stephen King tweeted. “I’d love to see her open a large can of whup-ass on Trump in the debates,” he added.

The leftist author has a history of attacking President Trump in a rather vile manner. King has described the President as a “vile, racist and incompetent bag of guts and waters,” a “horse’s ass,” and “as crooked as a broken nose and as dumb as a fencepost.”

However, I wonder how Mr King would truly fare under a Warren presidency. King actually came under fire recently by leftists himself, after he tweeted that quality was more important than diversity “in matters of art,” as “to do otherwise would be wrong.” These comments were absolutely unacceptable to them, and some described King as “backward and ignorant,” with others described his comments as “painful to read.”

As Warren loves to clamp down on your freedom of speech, I’m sure it wouldn’t be long before some of the non-binary members of her cabinet push for hate speech laws, which King may then fall foul of! In the words of Alanis Morissette, isn’t it ironic?

The novelist Stephen King said that he was backing Elizabeth Warren in the Democratic primaries, and wants to see her “open a large can of whup-ass” on President Trump.

“I’m Pulling for Elizabeth Warren”

“I’ll support and work for any Democrat who wins the nomination, but I’m pulling for Elizabeth Warren,” Stephen King tweeted. “I’d love to see her open a large can of whup-ass on Trump in the debates,” he added.

The leftist author has a history of attacking President Trump in a rather vile manner. King has described the President as a “vile, racist and incompetent bag of guts and waters,” a “horse’s ass,” and “as crooked as a broken nose and as dumb as a fencepost.”
