David Brooks and Ruth Marcus on Senate’s witness vote, Sanders’ surge

New York Times columnist David Brooks and Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus join Judy Woodruff to discuss the week's political news, including the Senate's decision not to call witnesses in President Trump's impeachment trial, Republicans' varying defenses of Trump's conduct around Ukraine and what recent polling trends among 2020 Democrats suggest about Monday's Iowa caucuses.

GOP Tops Democrats in Fundraising Haul

By David Kamioner | January 31, 2020

The impeachment drama may be annoying in some ways and a national calamity in others. But it certainly hasn’t dulled the fundraising acumen of the president and the Republican National Committee.

They pulled off their best ever non-election year by smashing their former numbers for December.

The GOP raised $26.5 million in the last month of 2019. That’s a $6 million gain on their November number and their best December ever. The increase is likely caused by a backlash effect from the presidential impeachment.

RELATED: Trump Wins Witness Vote 51-49, Acquittal Looks Solid

In 2019 the Republicans and Trump together raised $463 million, with an end of the year cash on hand balance of $194 million and $0 debt. The RNC raised $241 million of that amount.

The Democrats were $6.5 million in debt as of November of 2019.

Democrat contenders for the top also raised steep amounts, by Dem standards, in the last quarter of 2019. Biden raised $22.7 million. That puts him below Buttigieg at $24.7 million. Warren only raised $21.2 million. She was bested by the party cash leader, Bernie Sanders, at $34.5 million. For socialists, Sanders’ minions seem to have found at least enough money to pay for his Quixotic run for the White House.

These numbers may seen like a lot to you. But as a former political campaign director I can tell you a modern national campaign can go through $100 million before the voting even starts. No? Look at Michael Bloomberg’s media purchases just up to this point, before the first voting starts in Iowa.

He has already well surpassed that mark.

What’s it spent on? Mostly media, logistics, and personnel. Television ad buys don’t come cheap in media markets like New Jersey that boast really only two markets, New York City and Philadelphia. Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago political ad prices, even sometimes the cable buys?

Fougedaboudit.

It also takes a small army of drivers, advance staff, stage crews, digital nerds, oppo jocks, pollsters, media lounge lizards, graying honchos, and a host of others to run a modern presidential campaign. And they all want to be fed, housed when on the road, flown or bused about in a timely manner, and paid semi-well.

In return they will usually work like dogs seven days a week without much sleep. They will run on caffeine and hate and their only solace is that somehow, some way, the coiffed idiot they have hitched their star to doesn’t politically auger into a mountain and they end up with a cushy staff job at some obscure DC federal agency.

These men and women are the true deciders of America’s political fate, because if they drop the ball their clients do too and history is changed.

Welcome to your republic.

Chief Justice Roberts Visibly Irritated With Warren’s Suggestion His Legitimacy is Tainted Over Impeachment Trial

Chief Justice John Roberts became visibly agitated after having to read a question from Senator Elizabeth Warren which suggested the legitimacy of the Supreme Court, the Constitution, and his own career would be tainted following the impeachment trial.

Roberts had to read the question aloud – as he has throughout the trial with one notable exception – which insinuated an acquittal of President Donald Trump would lead to a loss of faith in major institutions of American government.

“Mr. Chief Justice, I send a question to the desk,” Warren declared from the floor of the Senate.

“At a time when large majorities of Americans have lost faith in government,” Roberts read, “does the fact that the chief justice is presiding over an impeachment trial in which Republican senators have thus far refused to allow witnesses or evidence contribute to the loss of legitimacy of the chief justice, the Supreme Court, and the Constitution?”

Roberts Angered

It’s difficult to say what Warren’s plan was here. Angering Roberts and the rest of the justices on the Supreme Court when you’re running for President seems unwise at best.

Fox News reports that upon finishing the question, Roberts became “visibly irritated” and “pursed his lips and shot a chagrined look.”

If we’re being honest, isn’t that how we all feel when listening to Senator Warren?

Perhaps Warren is paving the way for a proposal getting legs amongst extremist liberals who wish to abolish the Supreme Court in the era of Trump.

“The Court is now a blunt political instrument, used repeatedly to undermine outcomes of democratic governance — often on behalf of corporate interests,” leftist outlet Vox claimed, adding that “the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation has further delegitimized the Court in the public’s mind.”

Warren herself has proposed ‘packing’ the court with many more Justices as a means to lessen the influence of Presidential appointments, a move explicitly aimed at minimizing Trump’s victories after the Kavanaugh debacle.

“It’s not just about expansion, it’s about depoliticizing the Supreme Court,” she claimed.

Even Schiff Wouldn’t Go There

Upon reading the question directed at Democrat impeachment managers, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff stepped up to the microphone and promptly ran as far away from Warren as he possibly could.

“Senator, I uh, would not say that it contributes to a loss of confidence in the Chief Justice,” Schiff replied. “I think the Chief Justice has presided admirably.”

What he did suggest would be affected adversely, however, is the nation as a whole.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has expanded on this notion that a trial without fabricating new witnesses eliminates the legitimacy of the presidency.

“He will not be acquitted,” she said realizing he is on the verge of being acquitted.

“You cannot be acquitted if you don’t have a trial,” Pelosi continued. “You don’t have a trial if you don’t have witnesses and documentation and all of that. Does the president know right from wrong? I don’t think so.”

Schneider’s Response To Elizabeth Warren Hypocrisy Should Be Hall Of Fame Material!

Sen. Elizabeth Warren and other Democrats have done more than any other group to divide the USA, make no mistake about it.

They are the ones who have led in dividing the country into “tribalism.” They are the ones who distinguished gay, straight, male, female, and all of the other fad genders. Rich, poor, capitalists, socialists, citizens, immigrants. They are the ones who have focused on these differences between Americans, highlighted those differences, stirred those differences against each other, and convinced many of these “tribes” that they are victims.

When I hear Democrats talk about “disinformation,” the hair on the back of my neck stands up. I am sick and tired of the hypocrisy. This nation is taking a beating because these politicians can’t play it straight to save their lives.

This election campaign and the Impeachment of Donald Trump has shown us that even those who are incompetent can be elected to congress. We need stricter rules and psychological tests to weed out the phoneys. Also, we need a lot fewer lawyers.

There is a saying in business, “never let a lawyer or an accountant run your business.” That holds true even for Government.

Thank God for Rob Schneider, who isn’t afraid to hold Warren accountable.

Great to see someone with a broad platform of followers call out the fools in our leadership roles. We follow each other on social media, so I like him even more.

The funnyman responded to a series of tweets sent by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., on Wednesday in which the presidential hopeful urged big tech companies to “fight the spread of false information that disempowers voters and undermines democracy.

“The stakes of this election are too high. We need to fight the spread of false information that disempowers voters and undermines democracy. I’ll do my part—and I’m calling on my fellow candidates and big tech companies to do their part, too,” Warren’s tweet read, which certainly didn’t sit well with the comedian.

“Thank YOU @ewarren for treating Americans like we are so completely f—— stupid that we can’t think for ourselves,” Schneider wrote. “Luckily we have leaders like YOU who can tell us what to believe & how to vote. You are right:the stakes are too high to trust the people to decide for themselves.”

The comedian didn’t stop there and issued a follow up four hours later and accused Warren of being a champion of censorship and standing in the way of free speech. [Fox News]

Amid Warren’s tweetstorm, she also made a “pledge” that she would “not knowingly” use or spread false information to benefit her candidacy or to damage anyone else’s campaign. What? Did Warren not know she was not native American or the reason she was fired from her teaching job, or that her kids went to private school? Does anyone believe this lady? She’s as much a compulsive liar like Hillary Clinton and Adam Schiff.

Dems refuse to admit that they spread disinformation themselves and that there are two reasons Donald Trump beat Hillary, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton.

MORE NEWS: Iowa’s Des Moines Register Endorses Elizabeth Warren as the Democrat Candidate

These candidates are so desperate for an original idea they eschew qualifiers like is it legal, is it ethical, is it part of the American fabric that shaped this country for 245 yrs? They give themselves a safety zone that allows them to step over the boundaries into socialism. Those who attend the rally event would cheer wildly even if she announced a plan to confiscate all children under the age of three years old in the name of environmental concerns.

NONE of these candidates can pull off even one of their campaign promises. Expense is the number one hurdle, and social upheaval is a close second. They may as well give a speech that says, “If you elect me President I will create so much chaos in our country our boarders will collapse, and other countries will, out of European progressive doctrine, come to our aid and we will finally realize the Obama vision of becoming Europe.”

Schneider is absolutely correct. Yes, the internet is the wild west. That’s OK. Learn to not be so freaking gullible and check stuff out.

Will Joe Biden’s Mistakes Overshadow His Experience

By Robyn Kenney | January 30, 2020

It’s clear in this sea of Democratic Presidential candidates that if Joe Biden fails to lock in the nomination, it’s nobody’s fault but his own.

Biden’s gaffes are often laughable, or even puzzling, like the odd stories he’s told about his youth:

However his recent aggression towards voters on the campaign trail show a more volatile side to Biden. Far from the friendly Joe of the Obama years who’s mistakes were usually more cringe-worthy than aggressive.

RELATED: Warren Wants to Control Your Freedom of Speech

Try to watch this without laughing out loud:

But lovable Joe Biden has shown a different side of himself; conveying either a lack of inhibition gone wrong, or perhaps, and more likely, a glimpse into a deep-seated arrogance that has given way to hostility.

Watch the way Biden handles this man and takes hold of his jacket:

The problem still remains for the Democrats that Biden is their best shot at even coming close to beating Donald Trump.

The former VP had the nomination teed up for him – but just like a high school athlete with a propensity to get into trouble who has a scholarship on the line – everybody around him is thinking, “Just get through the year without getting in trouble and it’s yours.”

That kid usually decides to participate in a senior prank that involves stealing farm animals and putting them on the roof of the school at night, gets suspended, and loses his free ride.

All Joe Biden has to do is not put a goat on the roof, and he will be fine. But he can’t help himself.

Biden has continued to argue with voters against the urging of his staff to move along, as heard in the video above. He presumably refuses to fully prepare for debates and media events, based on his responses to attacks from his opponents, and his overall verbal fumbling.

Biden still has so much power over the other candidates, because as long as he’s moderately coherent and remains to appear confident in the wake of his mistakes – no one can beat his resume.

Joe Biden, by the fact that he served as Vice President for Barack Obama for eight years, with no major discord made public by the press or the administration, puts him light years ahead of any other democratic candidate.

On paper, Joe wins. Just read his resume compared to that of say, Elizabeth Warren or Pete Buttigieg.

Personality, presentability, and ethics aside, Biden should hands down be the nominee in this motley crew that has people subbing the phrase “voter enthusiasm” for “voter confidence”.

What about Bernie, they say. Well, Bernie’s a long-time, self-proclaimed socialist and if I have any faith in the voting population of this country to recognize the dangers of socialism it will be extremely rocked if Bernie won the nomination.

I’m not that worried about it.

RELATED: Alan Dershowitz Hits Back at Elizabeth Warren

It seems in the end, we’re looking at Joe Biden vs. Elizabeth Warren.

Neither candidate is particularly trustworthy or captivating. And Joe Biden’s resume may hold more weight psychologically with the American voting public than we realize.

There are new polls discussing the so-called trust factor of each candidate. In a recent survey from Quinnipiac University, the top trusted candidate was Sanders, followed by Biden, and then Warren.

Of course Sanders won “most honest” in this survey. He is literally always admitted that he wants to take everyone’s money and spread it around as he sees fit. No change in that platform.

You can trust Bernie to run the country off a cliff.

So unless I’m wrong about the majority of American voters being slightly weary of socialist policies; Sanders’ perceived honesty is a symptom of his maniacal radical views remaining consistent.

People trust Warren less than Biden, not because Biden is proven to lie less than Warren, but because they trust him to run the show. They trust that he knows how to handle himself in the White House, to play it cool, and not run in the room with wild ideas about how to “fix” our entire economic system with a Robin Hood scheme.

Biden knows what it’s like to be in high intensity situations and standby and listen. Warren is an intellectual egomaniac. It’s her way or the highway, and she has a lot of ideas.

If Joe Biden ever became the President of the United States, moderate Democrats can trust, for the most part, that he won’t be bullied by the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez agenda. He won’t go radical.

Biden might pander to the far-left to keep things quiet, but if he were to become President, things wouldn’t be that different policy-wise then from then when Obama was in office. That scares conservatives, but is a relief to middle of the road Democrats.

When it comes to Burisma, or any other scandal, Biden has the connections, power, and money to cover up, or at least get away with most of it in the end.

Look at Hillary and Benghazi. Or her email scandal. They made her sweat, but in the end she got away with everything. Other than the fact that she has to look in the mirror.

Scandal is not likely to bring down Joe Biden’s campaign, even if there’s truth to it. Only Joe can ruin his campaign – it’s his to lose.

Elizabeth Warren on Trump’s trial and why ‘women win’ elections

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has been present for the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump and heard Trump's legal team offer its defense of the charges against him. She is also a 2020 Democratic candidate for president. Warren joins Judy Woodruff to discuss why she views Trump's actions as akin to bribery and what it means to miss the last few campaign days before the Iowa caucuses.

Tamara Keith and Amy Walter on impeachment trial witnesses, Iowa polls

NPR's Tamara Keith and Amy Walter of the Cook Political Report join Judy Woodruff to discuss the latest political news, including whether enough Senate Republicans will vote to hear witnesses in the impeachment trial of President Trump and how 2020 presidential candidates are polling and campaigning in Iowa as its Democratic caucuses approach.

Iowa’s Des Moines Register Endorses Elizabeth Warren as the Democrat Candidate

By PoliZette Staff | January 27, 2020

While Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has surged to the tops of the polls in New Hampshire, a much tighter race abounds in Iowa.  Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sanders have battled for the lead with Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg remaining relevant parties in the polls.

Those latest polls have the Massachusetts Senator in fourth place with 15 percent support, trailing South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg by 4 points.  Biden and Sanders share the lead and are in a statistical dead heat at 22 percent.

However, despite recent figures, the big news this week was the Des Moines Register’s endorsement of Elizabeth Warren.

RELATED: Nadler Calls Trump a “Dictator”

After interviewing nine Democrat presidential candidates, the editorial board at Iowa’s top newspaper chose Warren, stating she is “the best leader for these times.”

While describing the reasoning behind their choice they stated, “the senior U.S. senator from Massachusetts is not the radical some perceive her to be. She was a registered Republican until 1996. She is a capitalist.”

However, despite a mostly glowing review and ultimately their prized endorsement.  The Register did qualify some of their statements and pushback against some of Warren’s ideas.

A qualification: Some of her ideas for “big, structural change” go too far. This board could not endorse the wholesale overhaul of corporate governance or cumulative levels of taxation she proposes. While the board has long supported single-payer health insurance, it believes a gradual transition is the more realistic approach. But Warren is pushing in the right direction.  [Des Moines Register]

Still, despite the endorsement, as indicated with the aforementioned poll numbers, Warren has a long way to go in order to be more statistically relevant in Iowa. However, such a climb – though unlikely – is not out of the realm of possibility.

As reported by Geoffrey Skelley at FiveThirtyEight, a great deal of Iowans have not made up their minds and new data from a New York Times Upshot/ Siena College poll found that 39 percent would be willing to change candidates.  Time, however, is not on Warren’s side though as the 2020 Iowa Democratic caucuses will take place on February 3, 2020.

Elizabeth Warren Vows to Create DOJ Task Force to Investigate Trump

In today’s episode of ‘It’s Okay For Democrats,’ Elizabeth Warren vows that, should she become President, she will commission a DOJ task force to investigate corruption in the Trump administration.

Warren released the plan to investigate her political opponent on Tuesday, posting it to her campaign website.

Warren’s latest platform, titled “Restoring Integrity and Competence to Government after Trump,” begins by explaining that the President “has run the most corrupt administration in history.”

Did she blackout during the entire Obama administration?

“I will direct the Justice Department to establish a task force to investigate violations by Trump administration officials of federal bribery laws, insider trading laws, and other anti-corruption and public integrity laws,” her campaign promise reads.

Warren will “give that task force independent authority to pursue any substantiated criminal and civil violations.”

The House of Representatives couldn’t get bribery to stick in their impeachment sham but reality be damned, Warren is going to find it.

Where’s the Outrage?

Where is the outrage over the suggestion that an occupant of the White House would unleash her Department of Justice to investigate a political opponent?

Didn’t the media and Democrats themselves tell us these are the actions of a dictator?

Now suddenly it’s okay to investigate alleged corruption because the President’s last name isn’t Clinton and his first name isn’t Hillary.

“Donald Trump will leave behind a government that has been infected by corruption and incompetence, and his vindictive actions as president suggest that he is likely to do everything he can to undermine the next president,” Warren’s campaign writes. “We cannot assume that everything will be fine once Donald Trump leaves office.”

Hillary herself has engaged in “lock him up” chants since she lost the election, something she once claimed was an affront to truth, justice and the American way.

RELATED: Hillary and Colbert Help Start ‘Lock Him Up’ Chant Directed at President Trump

Remove All Appointees

Warren’s plan also includes a section in which she vows to remove all political appointees.

“Rooting out the corruption in our government starts with wiping the slate clean on political appointments,” she states.

“Donald Trump gave influential, high-ranking positions to his donors, friends, and political allies,” the plan reads. “I will ask for the resignations of all political appointees, including U.S. Attorneys, save only those positions necessary to preserve continuity and protect national security during the transition period.

Again, does anybody recall the vitriol directed at President Trump for firing Obama-appointed attorneys during the transition, something every new administration does? Remember U.S. attorney Preet Bharara becoming a grandstanding member of the resistance by refusing to resign?

The hypocrisy by Warren and the media who will either ignore her threat to investigate Trump or tout it as a refreshing new policy is truly breathtaking.
