Manchin Is A Political Dead Man Walking
By David Kamioner | February 6, 2020
Years ago I went to a great winter resort in West Virginia. Along with smoking cigars and drinking bourbon, I sampled some of the down home culinary delights.
But throughout the entire sumptuous country breakfast inventory I did not witness even one example of a piece of toast that walks and talks. That is, until I saw Joe Manchin making a Senate floor speech on impeachment.
Not trusted by the Democrats because he votes with the Republicans too much. Manchin is a Democrat who only reluctantly endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016. Those factors made him a pariah in his own party. He only won 2018 reelection over his GOP opponent by less than 20,000 votes out of over 560,000 cast. That works out to a too close for comfort 0.3% margin of victory in a deep red Trump state.

Without those Trump crossovers in 2024 he will become, as mentioned above, a warm breakfast morsel. Thus, his vote to convict the president and remove him from office currently all but guarantees Manchin’s defeat in four years.
However, his pariah status has been somewhat mitigated by the fact that as he voted with the GOP much of the time he was treated as a fifth Beatle on occasion by the president and Mitch McConnell. Even with this vote that might have continued, after a decent interval, if Manchin had not sent out mixed signals on his vote.
Just a couple of days before the Wednesday impeachment votes he told the press he preferred a Senate censure of the president to conviction. He claimed that could get a bipartisan majority. A censure is an essentially toothless slap on the wrist from one politician to another.
When asked, given he was asking for an alternative to removal from office, if he would vote to convict the president he hemmed and hawed. The press, including this analyst, and GOP senators took that as a trial balloon and publicly put him in the leaning towards acquittal category. Manchin did not dissuade them.
And then he voted to convict.

Democrats breathed a small sigh of relief but Republicans felt sold out. The consequence of his guilty vote is that Manchin will go from being the GOP’s favorite Democrat to just another palooka to be crushed.
All for a vote he knew the Democrats couldn’t win anyway. Just like your 2016 endorsement of Hillary Clinton that you admitted was a dumb move, this one will cost you, Joe.
This time, it will cost you your Senate seat.

The Final Verdict?
Republicans Call for Romney to be Removed from GOP
Republicans across the board are calling for Sen. Mitt Romney to be kicked out of the GOP for voting to convict President Trump on Wednesday.
“Forever Bitter That He Will Never be POTUS”
Senator Romney voted to convict President Trump of an abuse of power in his office. Romney said that not voting to convict the President would “expose my character to history’s rebuke,” adding that he will “tell my children and their children that I did my duty to the best of my ability, believing that my country expected it of me.”
The President’s oldest son Donald Trump Jr. said on Twitter that Romney was “forever bitter that he will never be POTUS,” and is now “officially a member of the resistance & should be expelled from the GOP.” Andrew Surabian, a former White House advisor agreed, and added “#ExpelMitt.”
Mitt Romney is forever bitter that he will never be POTUS. He was too weak to beat the Democrats then so he’s joining them now.
He’s now officially a member of the resistance & should be expelled from the @GOP.

#ExpelMitt https://t.co/ACsnWTgPXR
— Andrew Surabian (@Surabees) February 5, 2020
Representative Lee Zeldin of New York tweeted that Romney “absolutely despises that Donald Trump was elected POTUS & he was not,” and that the senator has a “sore loser mentality.”
Mitt Romney absolutely despises that Donald Trump was elected POTUS & he was not. The sore loser mentality launched this sham impeachment & corruptly rigged & jammed it through the House. It looks like Schiff recruited himself a sore loser buddy on the GOP side to play along.
— Lee Zeldin (@RepLeeZeldin) February 5, 2020
Ronna McDaniel, the GOP Chairwoman, and Romney’s niece, slammed him on Twitter, saying that it wasn’t “the first time I have disagreed with Mitt, and I imagine it will not be the last. The bottom line is President Trump did nothing wrong, and the Republican Party is more united than ever behind him.”
This is not the first time I have disagreed with Mitt, and I imagine it will not be the last.
The bottom line is President Trump did nothing wrong, and the Republican Party is more united than ever behind him.
I, along with the @GOP, stand with President Trump.

Romney Must Go!
In Utah, a bill designed to allow citizens to recall sitting senators was already going through the legislature when Romney decided to vote for impeachment. HB217 was filed by Utah Rep. Tim Quinn – if 25% of active Utah voters signed a petition to recall a senator, then a recall question would be placed on the next ballot.
“Obviously I didn’t open this bill file after he made some of that news with impeachment, it would have never been drafted this quickly,” Quinn told The Deseret News. “So I can understand why people might think that, but if they understood the legislative process, this was well before that.”

It picked up a huge amount of traction from lawmakers and the public after Romney’s vote. Quinn said he received over 100 phone calls and 250 emails that were “100% positive to the bill.”
If I were living in Utah, I would be picking up the phone to Quinn or drafting an email right this minute – in my opinion, Romney’s removal can’t happen soon enough! Maybe when he’s booted out of office he might consider the wishes of the American people for once!

Rosie O’Donnell, Other Hollywood Liberals Praise Mitt Romney For Voting To Convict Trump
By PopZette Staff | February 6, 2020
Eight years ago, Mitt Romney was seen as the devil by Hollywood liberals as he was the Republican nominee in the 2012 presidential election. Now, however, Hollywood liberals have changed their tune about Romney after he was the only Republican senator to vote to convict President Donald Trump on impeachment charges yesterday.
Radical Hollywood liberals have been taking to Twitter in droves to praise Romney in the past 24 hours. One such liberal is Rosie O’Donnell, who has been in a bitter feud with Trump for over a decade. She wrote, “thank u @SenatorRomney for voting to convict – one republican with honor #ConvictAndRemove.”

Former “Who’s The Boss” star Alyssa Milano, who has become more famous in recent years for her radical anti-Trump activism than she ever was for her acting, also had words of praise for Romney.
“Thank you for doing what’s right, @MittRomney. History will remember you as a decent, courageous, man among cowards and fools,” she tweeted.

John Cusack, one of the most radically anti-Trump actors in Hollywood, simply wrote, “Romney tells the truth.”

“Incredible,” wrote former “The West Wing” star Bradley Whitford. “The radical idea that an elected official must put their oath to uphold the constitution above what’s most convenient for them politically. Thank you @MittRomney. Let’s help him blow this spark of decency into a fire that engulfs the madness of hatred and division.”

Even Bette Midler, who frequently attacks conservatives on her Twitter page, shared her love for Romney following his vote.
“Romney made a great speech, logical, well reasoned, emotional and true,” she tweeted. “It honestly looks as if #Romney is the ONLY person of courage in the entire party. THAT’S THE REAL OUTRAGE.”

When Romney ran for president against Barack Obama eight years ago, he could do nothing right in the eyes of the Hollywood left. They are only praising him now because he shamelessly catered to them by voting to convict Trump out of sheer bitterness and jealousy. As President Trump himself would say: SAD!

Moscow Mitch heaped with praise by Trump in ‘victory’ rally for making it all possible
Moscow Mitch McConnell featured big in impeached-for-life president Donald Trump's unhinged White House campaign rally on Thursday. "And Mitch McConnell, I want to tell you, you did a fantastic job," Trump said. "He understood this was crooked politics. This was crooked politics." Yes, if there's one thing the destroyer of the Senate and beneficiary of Russian largesse understands, it's being crooked.
"This guy is great, and I appreciate it, Mitch," Trump said later. He's "the greatest poker player," said the guy who has no impulse control. "Somebody said, 'You know, Mitch is quiet.' I said, 'He's not quiet.' […] He doesn't want people to know him." That might be the closest thing to truth Trump said. McConnell has worked very hard at keeping the depth of his evil from public view. "And they said, 'Is Mitch smart?' And I said, 'Well, let's put it this way: For many many years […] people have been trying to take his place, and to the best of my knowledge, I've never even heard the subject come up because they've been wiped out so fast."
What's Moscow Mitch doing now, besides basking in the sickly orange glow of his Dear Leader? Advancing five more judicial nominations to make sure that even the courts won't be available to rein in the newly anointed dictator.
We need to make sure that Trump is defeated, but just as critical, we need to make sure that McConnell never again has the power to use the Senate to create another Trump.
Impeachment may be over, but Pelosi clearly isn’t done shredding Trump
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi feels "liberated," as she put it at her Thursday press conference with reporters. "I feel very liberated," she said, repeating the sentiment twice. "I feel that I've extended every possible courtesy. I've shown every level of respect," she said of Trump. It sounded as if she might add "but now..." and then pivot to a glimpse of the new road ahead. She did not tip her hand. The path Pelosi is plotting is something that will unfold over time.
But for the moment, Pelosi ain't apologizing for nothing, despite taking some heat over performing a very public shredding of Donald Trump's State of the Union address Tuesday night. Asked if she had trampled on her consistent message of championing a certain dignity in our politics, Pelosi responded without missing a beat, "No, I did not. I tore up a manifesto of mistruths."
She reminded the press corps how hard it is to get them focused on reporting about the actual issues and policies House Democrats are working on, including an infrastructure bill and a bill they passed to lower drug prices (H.R. 3) that's currently dying a slow death on Mitch McConnell's desk. Meanwhile, Trump used his address as an opportunity to spew complete nonsense about Republicans supposedly protecting people's preexisting condition coverage when in fact they are working to dismantle it.
"He misrepresented all of that," she said. "It was very necessary to get the attention of the American people to say, this is not true and this is how it affects you," she said of her public display, adding, "And I don't need any lessons from anybody, especially the president of the United States, about dignity. Is it okay to start saying 'four more years' in the House of Representatives? It's just unheard of."
Pelosi later explained that her unexpected shredding was premeditated and had nothing to do with the fact that Trump hadn't shaken her hand at the beginning of the speech. "That meant nothing to me," she said. Instead, she had quickly scanned the speech and realized it was riddled with lies.
"When I saw the compilation of falsehoods," she explained, "I started to think there has to be something that clearly indicates to the American people that this is not the truth." In other words, far from a fit of pique, it was a little bit of theater by Pelosi, who was very much in control of the message she hoped to relay to the public.
She also skewered the crux of Trump's speech, saying he hadn't told the nation anything about where he planned to lead the nation. "That was not a State of the Union, that was his 'state of his mind' address" she explained. "We want a state of the Union—where are we, where are we going, and the rest."
Pelosi emphatically declared that the nation must vote Trump out. "Next year we will have a new president of the United States. That is an absolute imperative for our country," she noted.
Taken together, Pelosi's remarks reveal how offended she was that Trump coopted The People's House to stage a campaign rally filled with lies, chants, and completely devoid of a vision for the country. "Do it in your own office," she quipped. "We don't come in your office and do congressional business."
Pelosi has always been a measured and calculated politician, but she appears to be entering a new gloves-off phase of her speakership. Her final words before leaving the podium were unequivocal: "He has shredded the truth in his speech. He's shredding the Constitution in his conduct. I shredded the state of his mind address."
Just guessing there’s more shredding to come from Pelosi.
Yovanovitch offers a warning: Our democratic institutions ‘need the American people to protect them’
Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch has retired, and now she’s free to speak her mind. The woman who was the subject of a smear campaign by Rudy Giuliani and his buddies when she was ambassador to Ukraine, who Donald Trump fired and said would “go through some things,” and who was confronted with threatening tweets sent by Trump during her House impeachment inquiry testimony has done just that—spoken her mind—in a Washington Post op-ed. “What I’d like to share with you is an answer to a question so many have asked me,” she wrote. “What do the events of the past year mean for our country’s future?”
Yovanovitch expressed optimism about the integrity of her former colleagues in foreign service, about “the next generation of diplomats,” and about how every day she witnesses regular people “reanimating the Constitution and the values it represents.” But … there’s a but, and it very much has to do with the events that thrust Yovanovitch into the public eye and the man who fired her.
“I had always thought that our institutions would forever protect us against individual transgressors,” Yovanovitch wrote. “But it turns out that our institutions need us as much as we need them; they need the American people to protect them or they will be hollowed out over time, unable to serve and protect our country.”
Still more specifically, though still very much in the voice of a woman who has spent decades measuring every word carefully, “our public servants need responsible and ethical political leadership. This administration, through acts of omission and commission, has undermined our democratic institutions, making the public question the truth and leaving public servants without the support and example of ethical behavior that they need to do their jobs and advance U.S. interests.”
It’s amazing that Yovanovitch can be this optimistic, given what she’s been through. But her optimism comes in the form of a warning, and it seems like every day, Republicans are trampling on that optimism. Yovanovitch’s former colleagues who likewise testified in the impeachment trial are worried about their futures. A United States senator stood on the Senate floor, in front of C-SPAN’s cameras, and named the alleged whistleblower. Our democratic institutions need the American people to protect them. We need to heed that warning.
Trump Uses Profanity to Describe Russia Probe
On Thursday, President Trump gave his first post-impeachment trial remarks and did not hesitate to go after his political enemies, where things got a little salty at moments.
“We’ve all been through a lot together. It’s been a very unfair situation,” Trump said in an address from the White House’s East Room.
Trump on Impeachment
“We’ve been going through this now for three years. It was evil, it was corrupt, it was dirty cops, it was leakers. It was a disgrace. Had I not fired James Comey, who was a disaster, by the way, it’s possible I wouldn’t even be standing here right now,” he continued before pivoting briefly to his accomplishments.

“We’ve done more than any president, any administration, you look at all of the things we’ve done,” he added.
Trump went on to say that he believes the stock market would have crashed if had he not become president.
“That’s all our credit. One of the reasons it’s going up … and one of the reasons the stock market has gone up so much in the last few days is people think we’re doing so well, they liked the State of the Union speech,” Trump said.
The president then told everyone he wasn’t giving a speech, per se.

‘We first went through Russia, Russia, Russia. It was all bull****’
“This is really not a news conference, it’s not a speech, it’s not anything, it’s just we’re sort of — it’s a celebration because we have something that just worked out. It worked out. We went through hell unfairly. Did nothing wrong. Did nothing wrong,” Trump said, holding up a copy of the Washington Post and its headline that read, “Trump acquitted.”
“We first went through Russia, Russia, Russia. It was all bull****,” Trump continued.
“Little did we know we were running against some very, very bad and evil people with fake dossiers, with all of these horrible, dirty cops that took these dossiers and did bad things,” he said. “They knew all about it.”

Taking Aim at Schiff and Pelosi
Trump did not hesitate to take direct aim at Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi.
“They made up facts. A corrupt politician named Adam Schiff made up my statement to the Ukrainian president,” he said about Schiff’s parody of Trump’s phone call to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Adam Schiff is a vicious, horrible person. Nancy Pelosi is a horrible person, and she wanted to impeach a long time ago when she said, ‘I pray for the president.’ She doesn’t pray. She may pray but she prays for the opposite. But I doubt she prays at all,” Trump concluded. “These are vicious people.”
