The Republican response to Biden’s State of the Union was, as usual, detached from reality

There was once a time when we might have live-blogged the Republican responses to a State of the Union address, but we're all much older and more tired now and the collective "news" broken during all State of the Union responses combined, in the past decade, consists of that time Marco Rubio needed to take a drink of water and pretty much nothing else.

The Republican response this time around was apparently given by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, who perhaps needed a bit of good publicity after she was discovered to have taken nearly a half million dollars of federal pandemic relief money to pay staffers in her own state government office, which isn't what the pandemic fund was intended for. Reynolds also allegedly took steps to hide where the cash was going, and has also refused to provide the documentation required for auditing the expenditure, so she's clearly been doing her be more like Donald Trump homework.

Anyhoo, Reynolds continued the long tradition of State of the Union responses that completely ignore the actual speech they're responding to in order to fire off a laundry list of pre-determined attack lines, so we're going to respect that choice by reviewing Kim Reynolds' speech without bothering to actually watch or read it. I thought the part where she promised to kill, stuff, and mount Hank, the bear breaking into South Lake Tahoe homes for winter snacks, to be unnecessarily gruesome. I don't like the part where she swore that Republicans were on Ukraine's side and against Russia, but she kept mispronouncing "Ukraine" as "eclair" so it sounded like she was defending Republican dessert rights. The part where she juggled Hummel figurines while reciting Donald Trump's favorite poem, The Snake, showed remarkable dexterity but I thought muddled her central anti-Hank messages.

There you go, you're caught up.

From actual not-entirely-imaginary news coverage, it appears the parts of Reynolds' speech we missed focused primarily on convincing America that the pandemic, the economic chaos of the pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and a new wave of our children learning uncomfortable things are all Joe Biden's fault. According to The New York Times, she was selected for the bit by Sen. Mitch McConnell "in part" because of Reynolds' anti-masking stances. Reynolds is one of the Republican governors who has signed on to efforts to ban school mask mandates, because Republican parents don't like masks and it's extremely important to Republican parents that these preferences be played out in classroom proxy battles that may or may not kill teachers or neighbors or other parents or the kids themselves outright.

Do not let anyone, anywhere tell you that Americans "love their children." Some do and some don't. For many parents, that "love" is purely conditional and predicated on their children hating the right things or hurting the right people, which is why books that portray LGBT adolescents as normal and worthy of normal lives are among the top targets on all the newest banned book lists.

The other bit of Reynolds' speech consisted of a half-hearted attempt to erase all of recent Republican history to claim that Republicans are indeed in Ukraine's corner and against Vladimir Putin's bloody war, despite the Republican Party specifically stripping support for Ukraine from the last platform it ever bothered to write, per the demands of the Trump campaign; despite Republican airwaves and conferences being awash with praise for the "smart" Putin and his "smart" white nationalist, non-woke murders and violence; and despite Gov. Kim Reynolds herself being a strong backer of Donald Trump's extortion of Ukraine during Trump's first impeachment trial. According to the Kim Reynolds of back then, holding Trump to account for blocking military aid to the at-war Ukraine so that he and Rudy Giuliani could pressure Ukraine's democratic government into announcing a thoroughly fake investigation of the Biden family was outrageous.

Now she's just another one of the insufferably ambitious Republican governors insisting that the party's previous explicit support for sabotaging the Ukrainian government using propaganda backed by pro-Putin oligarchs is nothing the rest of us should be going on about. Republicans didn't back Trump's every effort to hand Putin whatever Putin expressed even mild interest in. Republicans didn't actually nod and applaud during the countless episodes in which Trump or one of his hackish underlings attacked the very premises of NATO or flung cheap, spurious insults towards the nations that comprise it. Heavens no, and to prove it Kim will add three more Hummel figurines to her performance.

I think we've given Reynolds' response about the right amount of attention now, so we're good. The short version is that once again, Republican leaders chose as their best spokesperson an anti-mask, pandemic-prolonging, culture-war-focused hack currently under investigation for stealing government funds and who turned in a performance that had not a damn thing to do with anything, but instead was filled with the same six or seven talking points Republicans have currently chosen to flood the airwaves with while completely ignoring all the misery their incompetence bestowed on the rest of us.

Who else were they going to pick? The still-indicted Texas attorney general? The Florida governor just caught on camera yelling at students for wearing masks in his presence? Tucker?

Ayanna Pressley sums up why impeaching Donald Trump is about more than just symbolism

It’s been just over one month since pro-Trump insurgents rioted at the U.S. Capitol, creating both physical and emotional damages. Many who survived the riots have spoken out about their personal experiences, including, as Daily Kos covered, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has done two live videos detailing her trauma. For those of us who followed the insurgency from home, we know that after a group of countless white people invaded the Capitol, custodial workers—including many people of color—were left to clean their mess.

Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley spoke to CNN host Jake Tapper about just that subject on Sunday morning, appearing on State of the Union. Her response is smart, moving, and emotional, and absolutely worth a watch. Let’s delve into it below.

Tapper referenced the one-month anniversary of the insurgency, as well as Donald Trump’s impeachment trial beginning this coming Tuesday. “You lived through the events of January sixth,” Tapper stated. “What do you say to people who say, ‘Come on, just move on’?”

“If we really believe that this is a moment of reckoning in every way, then we must act accordingly,” Pressley replied. “And that means that Donald J. Trump must be held accountable because he is culpable for having incited this insurrection by perpetuating this big lie. This House has twice done its job. He will forever be the twice impeached president by this Democratic-majority led House.

Now, the Senate must honor their oath and impeach Donald J. Trump to hold him accountable,” Pressley continued. “But also, to bar him from running for public office ever again. And then, we know that he had accomplices. Who told on themselves. In broad daylight. They aided and abetted this insurrection by perpetuating this big lie. And they must be expelled. And then we must continue to investigate, Jake, so that any individuals or agencies that enabled this insurrection are taken to account.

But let me just say this, for those that continue to feign great surprise about what happened on January 6th. As a Black woman, to be barricaded in my office, using office furniture and water bottles… On the ground, in the dark. That terror, those moments of terror, is familiar in a deep and ancestral way for me. And, I want us to do everything to ensure that a breach like this never occurs at the Capitol. But I want us to address the evil incurred that is white supremacy in this nation. This is not only about securing the Capitol to ensure that members, and our staffs, and custodial staff, and food services workers, are safe in the Capitol… It is that we are safe in America.

One of the images that I am haunted by,” Pressley continued, “is the Black custodial staff cleaning up the mess left by that violent white supremacist mob. That is a metaphor for America. We have been cleaning up after violent white supremacist mobs for generations. And it must end. So, impeach, expel, investigate.”

Tapper mentioned that some Congresspeople have expressed fear for their safety following the insurgency, and noted that they are not sharing Pressley’s location during the interview because of her “significant” security concerns and that many House colleagues blame rhetoric coming from some House Republicans. Surprising no one, Tapper mentioned Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene

“Simply put,” he asked. “Do you feel safe going to work?”

“Look, I feel safe,” Pressley said. “Living with threats and living with bigots, who are as vile in their rhetoric as they are in the policies that they seek and enact, and the harm that they seek to cause the most marginalized communities, Black Americans in particular, is not new. Again, this is familiar in an ancestral sort of way. So, it is not going to deter or obstruct me from doing my job for the American people.” Then Pressley discussed the importance of a COVID-19 response that leaves no one behind.

Here’s that clip.

On a related note, New Jersey Rep. Andy Kim tweeted about his personal experience cleaning up after the riots. The thread is quickly going viral and is well worth checking out, too.

‘Disgraceful’: Steve Scalise Slams Pelosi for Ripping Up Trump’s Speech

House Republican Whip Steve Scalise blasted Speaker Nancy Pelosi for ripping up President Trump’s speech after his address was over on Tuesday night, calling her actions “disgraceful.”

“I thought it was disgraceful. It’s unbecoming of a speaker,” Scalise told CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett in an interview for “The Takeout” podcast. “Frankly, Speaker Pelosi should apologize as well, because it’s not the image she should want to portray as the speaker of the House.”

Did Pelosi’s Stunt Disrespect the President’s Guests?

When Garrett mentioned to Scalise that Pelosi said she was justified in ripping the speech because she believed it was a “manifesto of mistruths,” Scalise wondered if her stunt actually represented Democrats disrespecting White House guests present at the speech, including a former Tuskegee airman and a soldier who was reunited with his family.

“I think she at a minimum owes a deep apology to the president and the country,” Scalise said.

Scalise said he believes Trump will be reelected by a wide margin in the Electoral College, and that the President could also win the popular vote in 2020, after losing that vote by 3 million votes in 2016.

Scalise Says Trump Will be Re-Elected

“The popular vote’s a different situation, but look, it’s possible,” Scalise said, before downplaying the importance of the popular vote. “Ultimately, it’s like the Super Bowl. You don’t get the trophy for getting more yards than the other team. You get the trophy for getting more points.”

Scalise also voiced his dissatisfaction with Republican senators Lisa Murkowski and Lamar Alexander who voted to acquit President Trump during his impeachment trial, but also believed the president’s behavior had been “inappropriate.” Scalise insisted that Mr. Trump had done nothing inappropriate or wrong when he asked Ukraine’s president to investigate a political rival.

“The president’s done his job,” Scalise said.

On Wednesday, Scalise tweeted in support of Republican Congresswoamn Kay Granger’s resolution to condemn Pelosi’s actions.

“Ripping up the President’s official State of the Union speech with the nation watching is beneath the dignity of the House of Representatives,” Scalise tweeted. “JUST NOW → @RepKayGranger introduced a resolution to condemn Nancy Pelosi’s disgraceful behavior.”

“She must be held accountable,” he added.

#MattGaetzIsATool trends big-time after announcement of ‘ethics complaint’ filing against Pelosi

On Thursday morning, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida announced that he had filed an ethics complaint against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for ripping up her copy of Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech. It’s predictable and arguably exactly what Pelosi was expecting, with Gaetz saving network pundits from hours of bad takes on the actual contents of the speech. Gaetz is acting out one of the many theatrical displays of fealty that Republican hacks will be performing for their fearful and corrupt leader. It’s very on-brand for the Republican Party: conducting a witch hunt against a woman, wasting American taxpayer money, and not doing their actual jobs as legislators.

Gaetz is a special kind of craven, though, as he combines the condescension of Ted Cruz with the piss-poor intellect of Louie Gohmert. This is a man who has in the past tried to intimidate witnesses and has had his own run-ins with the law, all issues of ethics.

After the announcement of the ethics complaint, #MattGaetzIsATool went viral on Twitter.

Because there is video of every hypocritical moment in these many Republican tools’ lives, here’s a reminder of the kind of hypocritical, two-inch-deep politician Matt Gaetz is.

Gingrich: Pelosi Should be Censured for “Viciously Partisan” Actions

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich called for Nancy Pelosi to be censured for her “viciously partisan” behaviour at the State of the Union.

Gingrich: “I am Disgusted and Insulted”

At the end of President Trump’s incredible State of the Union speech on Tuesday night, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi decided it would be a good idea to rip up a copy of the speech that the President had just given. Pelosi ripped it up while the cameras were still rolling, in some sort of cringeworthy “act of defiance” against the President who she is desperately trying to remove from office.

The speech included praise for World War II veterans, our brave border enforcement officers, young African-American students and premature babies, all of which Pelosi decided deserved to be torn up.

RELATED: Outrage After ‘Classless’ Nancy Pelosi Rips Up Trump’s SOTU Speech And Tosses It Away

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, the Speaker during the last impeachment process, was appalled by Pelosi’s behavior.

“As Speaker of the House for four State of the Unions by a President of the other party, I am disgusted and insulted by the viciously partisan action of Nancy Pelosi tearing up the speech,” Gingrich wrote on Twitter. “She isn’t clever or cute her childishness insults our American traditions -should be censured.”

Censure is the Only Way Forward!

Many users on Twitter were in stern agreement with Gingrich, and were disgusted with Pelosi’s actions.

RELATED: Here’s The Exact Moment Trump Smacked Down Democrat Socialists In His SOTU Speech

I certainly agree with Gingrich that censuring Pelosi is the way forward. There is a difference between criticizing the President, which she has every right to do, and then being blatanly disrespectful to not only him, but all of his invited guests.

Furthermore, she couldn’t even wait until the speech had barely ended – another big middle finger to the President. Censuring occurs when a member’s actions “run counter to the group’s acceptable standards for individual behavior” – if this doesn’t fall under that category, then I don’t know what does!

Pelosi: ‘He shredded the truth, so I shredded his speech’

Could this be a turning point of sorts? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi surprised many observers Tuesday night when she punctuated Donald Trump's lie-laden State of the Union address with an unceremonious rebuke.

“He shredded the truth, so I shredded his speech,” Pelosi said Wednesday morning, according to Politico, explaining why she tore up a copy of Trump's speech at the conclusion of the address. As Pelosi relayed to her caucus the motivation behind her uncharacteristic break with decorum, her remarks suggested that she might be opening a new, more pointed chapter in her post-impeachment relationship with Trump. She told her Democratic caucus members she felt "liberated" by tearing up Trump's words in front of a national audience.

"She said that he disgraced the House of Representatives by using it as a backdrop for a reality show," Kentucky Rep. John Yarmuth told Politico.

Echoing Pelosi's sentiments, Georgia Rep. Hank Johnson called Trump's theatrics during the speech—such as awarding rancid radio host Rush Limbaugh with the medal of honor—a "disgraceful display."

“He dishonored the State of the Union as an institutional practice,” Rep. Johnson said. “It was kind of outright pandering to his base."

Democratic members described Pelosi as frustrated by Trump's speech, which leaves one wondering if she might really take off the gloves in the months leading up to November. Pelosi is a loyal student of public opinion and polls suggest the public continues to be on the side of Democrats in so far as impeachment goes and their bid to get witnesses included in the Senate trial.

But after Republican senators seal Trump's acquittal later on Wednesday, Pelosi will still have cards to play, including subpoenaing former national security adviser John Bolton or even indicted Giuliani associate Lev Parnas, who apparently has a trove of receipts.

Whatever Pelosi's mood, she clearly has options, likely including some the public isn't even aware of.

Tlaib, Omar Storm Out During Trump’s State of the Union Speech

Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and a host of other Democrat lawmakers stormed out of the President’s State of the Union speech Tuesday night.

It was one of several planned stunts by a bitter resistance party watching their recent impeachment efforts slip away.

Tlaib (D-MI), in an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, claimed mention of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was what “triggered” her.

“I think, you know, even the mention of Brett Kavanaugh for me is a trigger,” she told Maddows’ gullible audience.

To nobody’s surprise, she then proceeded to slander Kavanaugh with a blatant lie.

“Just as a woman in America, the fact that he, you know, rightfully was accused and having an incredibly strong woman come before the public and the world and tell her story of sexual assault by this person that was appointed to the Supreme Court is just — I couldn’t stand still and not do anything about it, and I needed to walk away from that.”

Kavanaugh was never ‘rightfully accused’ and the numerous fake witnesses Democrats hauled before Congress in an attempt to stop his nomination were proven to be lying at worst, inconsistent at best with their accusations.

Kavanaugh should consider suing Tlaib for defamation.

Classless ‘Squad’

There is little doubt that the entire ‘Squad’ coordinated their little protest. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) announced prior to the State of the Union that they would be boycotting the speech.

“None of this is normal, and I will not legitimize it,” AOC insisted. “Consequently, I will not be attending the State of the Union.”

With that in mind, it was only a matter of time before Tlaib and Omar (D-MN) choreographed their stunt.

The Hill reported, “the seats for Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib were empty before the address was finished,” though they added Omar’s office did not comment.

RELATED: Report: ICE, FBI Actively Reviewing Criminal Activity by Ilhan Omar

Triggered

Several Democrats immediately took to social media to tweet about their brave and stunning protest, another indication that it was planned and coordinated.

“I just walked out of the #StateOfTheUnion,” Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) bragged. “I’ve had enough. It’s like watching professional wrestling. It’s all fake.”

Fake? He must be confusing the SOTU with the House impeachment scam.

“I just walked out of the #StateOfTheUnion,” Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) similarly conveyed. “I can’t stand a liar. This man’s presidency is a national tragedy.”

The ‘national tragedy’ is that we have intellectually deficient children like this serving as members of Congress.

The Democrats respond to Trump’s State of the Union

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has designated rising star Democratic women to provide the Democratic response to the State of the Union. Michigan's first-term Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is delivering the English-language response. Rep. Veronica Escobar, a freshman representing El Paso, Texas, is delivering the Spanish-language response.

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020 · 3:33:29 AM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

Whitmer begins by noting that she’s at her daughter’s public school, which is quite the contrast with Trump’s attacks on public education.

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020 · 3:35:48 AM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

Whitmer is going with optimism over Trump’s message of fear, with the importance of potholes and infrastructure and what Democrats like Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy are doing about it.

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020 · 3:36:48 AM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

“Bullying people on Twitter doesn’t fix bridges—it burns them.”

Whitmer then turns to health care and her time as a member of the sandwich generation, caring for her own baby and for her mother during her mother’s fight with cancer.

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020 · 3:39:15 AM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

Whitmer goes on to emphasize teens who’ve raised money for medical treatment for themselves or their loved ones. “No one should have to crowdsource their health care. Not in America.”

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020 · 3:39:53 AM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

Have to say, a lot of the time the role of the SOTU response is a kiss of death for a rising politician, but Whitmer feels really strong here.

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020 · 3:41:20 AM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

“Michigan invented the middle class, so we know: if the economy doesn’t work for working people, it just doesn’t work.” Whitmer goes on to tout House Democrats’ legislation to raise the minimum wage and allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices. She takes that right home to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020 · 3:42:37 AM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

If there’s a Democratic governor who isn’t getting a shout out here, that person must be pretty unhappy, because this is a strong litany of actions Democratic governors have taken for working families.

On impeachment: “The truth matters. Facts matter. And no one should be above the law.”

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020 · 3:48:25 AM +00:00 · Gabe Ortiz

Rep. Veronica Escobar of Texas, delivering the Spanish-language Democratic response, addresses the white supremacist terrorist attack that devastated her community:

“On August 3rd of last year, El Paso suffered from the deadliest targeted attack against Latinos in American history.  A domestic terrorist confessed to driving over 10 hours to target Mexicans and immigrants.  Just before he began his killing spree, he posted his views online and used hateful language like the very words used by President Trump to describe immigrants and Latinos.

That day, the killer took 22 innocent lives, injured dozens, and broke all of our hearts.

Incidents of gun violence take place in our schools, places of worship and neighborhoods every single day.”

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020 · 3:49:14 AM +00:00 · Gabe Ortiz

Rep. Escobar on Trump’s lawlessness and the need to continue fighting for accountability:

“We know that President Trump violated his oath by asking for foreign interference, jeopardizing the integrity of our elections, putting our national security at risk, and then attempting to cover up his wrongdoing.

This is a tragic moment, and Congress must defend our republic.

We Democrats will continue to fight for truth and for what is right.

No one is above the law.”

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020 · 3:50:50 AM +00:00 · Gabe Ortiz

Rep. Escobar: “From attacks against Dreamers, family separation, the deaths of migrant children, to the Remain in Mexico policy that sends asylum seekers into dangerous situations. These are policies none of us ever imagined would happen in America in our lifetime.

I remember seeing the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island for the first time.  I was in awe of Lady Liberty.  She stands as the guardian of our ideals—that all people are created equal, that the vulnerable are to be cared for and not shunned, and that America is the shining example of goodness.

It is up to all of us—in the face of one of the most challenging times in history—to reflect the dignity, grace of Lady Liberty and the values of America.”

We are hearing, again, as in previous #SOTU, horrible stories that distort a reality immigrants, with or without papers, commit less crime than people born in the United States.

Do you suppose Trump will next talk about all the people killed and hurt by the massive rise in white supremacist violence. No? Okay. #SOTU

Sad! CNN Complains After Trump Blocks Them From Pre-SOTU Lunch

CNN is accusing President Trump of targeting the network by not inviting any of their reporters to an annual pre-State of the Union lunch.

Commentator Brian Stelter reports that three sources have confirmed the network is being excluded from the lunch.

“President Donald Trump’s targeting of CNN is moving to yet another arena: The annual presidential lunch with television network anchors,” Stelter complained.

The lunch gathering is considered off-the-record and journalists from most major news networks are typically invited to get a glimpse of the President’s mindset prior to the address to Congress.

Here Come the Tears

Several mainstream media figures were outraged that the White House would dare not invite CNN to the proceedings.

The off-the-record proceedings. With reporters who are relentlessly anti-Trump.

Hard to imagine why the President wouldn’t want that circus surrounding him before a triumphant SOTU address as he nears acquittal in the Senate impeachment trial.

“Every news organization should stand by its peer CNN, stand up against Trump and stand for a free press and the first amendment by boycotting the impeached president’s lunch,” journalist Steven Beschloss demanded.

Likewise, CNN White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins asked of her peers, “Why would any other anchor go to this?”

Well, because they don’t work for a fake news outlet would be my number one guess.

Why the Sad Face CNN?

Interesting that CNN would be outraged over exclusion from the State of the Union lunch. Especially considering the network themselves boycotted the White House Christmas party in 2018.

Lo and behold, it was Stelter who gleefully announced it on social media at the time.

“[White House] is hosting a Christmas party for media,” Stelter relayed. “Lots of curiosity about who will [and] will not attend. CNN staffers will not.”

So brave, so stunning.

“In light of the President’s continued attacks on freedom of the press and CNN, we do not feel it is appropriate to celebrate with him as his invited guests,” a spokesperson for the far-left network said at the time.

So they complain when they boycott Trump, and they complain when Trump boycott’s them. Which is it? If you didn’t like the attacks before, what changed your mind to the point where you’re begging for an invite?

Quite frankly, the President isn’t about to let up on his attacks against CNN any time soon. Why? Because they have no intention of operating as an organization with integrity any time soon. He’s not obligated to invite anybody, let alone a second-rate outfit.

Anyone recall CNN’s outrage when Barack Obama booted reporters from conservative newspapers off of his airplane? Did they stand in solidarity with their colleagues then?

Spare us the crocodile tears now.
