Trump, ‘deeply gifted orator’ his staff says, delivers the State of the Union address Tuesday night

So this is happening as scheduled, even though this is already the worst week of the century and the last thing anyone needs. Impeached president Donald Trump will deliver his State of the Union address Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 9 PM ET. It will be on every network as well as the regular cable news outlets and C-SPAN. You can watch and mock along with your friends here at Daily Kos, as well.

The White House is setting expectations insanely high as totalitarian regimes do, for this coming tour de force penned by dear leader himself. "The president is a best-selling author and deeply gifted orator who packs arenas and has a meticulous and carefully honed method for writing his speeches," Hogan Gidley, a White House lackey, said in a statement, "whether it be at a rally, a manufacturing plant opening or the State of the Union. What the American people hear is 100 percent President Trump's own words." That last sentence is possibly true.

Those "carefully honed" words will probably be about the economy, maybe about the coronavirus, probably about the new trade agreement, the United States Mexico Canada Agreement replacing NAFTA, and possibly the trade deal just signed with China. He may stay on script and ignore impeachment. He may do anything because when you're a celebrity, you can do anything.

The Democratic responses will come from rising-star Democratic women. Michigan's first-term Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will deliver the English-language response. Rep. Veronica Escobar, a freshman representing El Paso, Texas, will deliver the Spanish-language response.

After betraying America, Senate Republicans beg Trump not to talk impeachment at State of the Union

Here's what it looks like when you're complicit in the cover-up of a crime: Asked if she thought Donald Trump should talk about impeachment in his upcoming State of the Union address on Tuesday, Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst offered curtly, "I don't."

Other Republican senators joined in Ernst's What are you, crazy? reaction, according to CNN’s Manu Raju. “If I was writing his speech I wouldn't include it," responded Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota. Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana also counseled against it: “Personally, I’d advise him not to.” Nothing screams guilty conscience like trying to hide your paw prints at the scene of the crime.

Wanna kick all these shameless Republicans to the curb? Give $2 right now to the Daily Kos effort to flip the Senate in November.

It's so telling that Senate Republicans are desperate for Trump to shut up about the impeachment that they have so eagerly helped him shut down. If they felt even remotely good about their actions, they'd be fine with him talking it up. Instead, Senate Republicans know that they have cheated America out of a fair trial and airing of the facts, and they'd rather Trump didn't remind the country of that.

What's hilarious is that Trump will almost surely defy their counsel. It's hard to imagine that the orange menace in the Oval Office will have the discipline to steer clear of the topic regardless of what's on the teleprompter. It will likely be one of the Senate GOP's first of many brushes with You reap what you sow.

Sign the petition to Nancy Pelosi: Revoke Trump’s invitation to the State of the Union. The House must not be complicit in his corruption.

Texas Rep. Veronica Escobar to give Spanish-language Democratic response to State of the Union

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have announced that Rep. Veronica Escobar of Texas will deliver the Spanish-language Democratic response to Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech next month.

“In the House of Representatives, she is making a difference for El Pasoans and for all Americans, as she fights to end the gun violence epidemic and to protect children and families at the southwest border,” Pelosi said in a statement. “Her values and vision beautifully represent our party and our country, and we look forward to hearing her positive message of progress.”

As noted by Pelosi in the statement, Escobar made history as one of the first Latinas to be elected to represent Texas in Congress, alongside her colleague (and manager in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial) Rep. Sylvia Garcia. Like many of her freshman colleagues, Escobar has made a powerful mark in Congress during her first year in office.

Following the white supremacist terror attack in El Paso last year, Escobar filled the presidential void to become a comforter-in-chief to her distraught community while condemning the kind of rhetoric that influenced the attack. When Trump asked her to join him during his visit to El Paso, she declined, saying, “I refuse to be an accessory.” Escobar has also been a compassionate advocate for immigrant families, and has helped lead investigations into some of the most harmful anti-immigrant policies from the Trump administration.

This past November, Escobar was elected by her colleagues as the newest member of the House Democratic leadership team. “Congresswoman Escobar’s election to the Democratic House leadership is monumental for Latino representation in Congress,” Latino Victory Project said at the time. “Since day one, Escobar established herself as a steadfast, hard-working leader in the freshman class, whose penchant for consensus-building did not go unnoticed.”

“I am honored to be delivering the Democratic Spanish-language response to President Trump’s State of the Union and look forward to addressing our nation on the progress Democrats have made For the People,” said Escobar in the statement.  “Our diversity is our strength.  Now more than ever, Democrats will continue to celebrate our diversity, defend our democracy, and work for a more equal and just nation.”
