Republicans knock Biden for not freeing Whelan in prisoner swap

A growing number of Republican lawmakers are criticizing President Biden for freeing a Russian arms dealer to secure WNBA star Brittney Griner’s release, and for failing to free former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan in the deal.

Biden on Thursday morning announced Griner was returning to the U.S. after she spent nearly 10 months in Russian custody, in exchange for the U.S. releasing infamous arms dealer Viktor Bout.

The administration had also sought the release of Whelan, who was arrested in Russia in 2018 on spying charges that he vehemently denies, but Biden on Thursday said Moscow is “treating Paul’s case different than Brittney’s.”

Republicans quickly issued statements expressing relief at Griner's release while condemning the president for snubbing Whelan. Many of the GOP lawmakers also expressed worry the deal would incentivize Moscow to imprison Americans in the future for leverage.

"The Biden administration has allowed Viktor Bout, a dangerous arms dealer who was convicted of conspiring to kill American law enforcement, to walk free,” Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.), the House Armed Services Committee ranking member, said in a statement.

“This move to appease Vladimir Putin will only encourage further hostage taking by Russian security forces. While I welcome the release of Brittney Griner, I cannot help but think about Paul Whelan — as he has apparently been abandoned by the Biden administration,” Rogers added.

Biden said on Thursday his administration will "never give up” on securing Whelan's release.

Bout was serving a 25-year prison sentence on charges of conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals, kill U.S. employees, transfer and use of anti-aircraft missiles and support of a designated terrorist organization.

He has been accused of running massive arms shipments to sanctioned regimes in African and Middle Eastern countries, earning him the nicknames “Merchant of Death” and “Sanctions Buster.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who introduced impeachment articles against Biden last year, said the swap marks another reason to push for his removal from office.

“Biden just returned the ‘Merchant of Death,’ an international arms dealer convicted of conspiring to kill Americans, to Putin and left former Marine Paul Whelan, who has been unjustly detained for over four years, to rot in a Russian prison,” wrote Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), the chairman of the Republican Study Committee, the largest conservative caucus in the House.

“Biden's now aiding both sides of the war,” Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), who will succeed Banks in the role, wrote in a retweet of Banks’s post.

Whelan himself spoke with CNN on Thursday from Russia, saying he was happy that Griner was released but adding he felt "greatly disappointed" that more had not been done to secure his freedom.

“My prayers are with Brittney Griner and her family as they heal from this,” Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) wrote on Twitter. "I hope Brittney continues to use her platform to keep the pressure to bring former Marine Paul Whelan home. Leaving Paul in Russia to Putin's whim would be a disgraceful abdication of Biden's leadership.”

Scott's home-state colleague, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), tweeted, “It is a bitter pill to swallow that Mr. Whelan remains in custody while we release the ‘Merchant of Death’ Viktor Bout back to Russia.”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, expressed relief at Griner’s release while criticizing the continued detainment of Whelan and Marc Fogel, an American teacher detained in Russia for allegedly possessing 17 grams of medical marijuana in violation of Russian law.

“Unfortunately, the Biden Administration’s handling of this situation leaves behind other Americans, like veteran Marine Paul Whalen and teacher Marc Fogel,” Rubio wrote.

“What’s more, Putin and others have seen how detaining high-profile Americans on relatively minor charges can both distract American officials and cause them to release truly bad individuals who belong behind bars.”

Trey Gowdy Slams Media For Ignoring Pelosi’s ‘Open Duplicity When It Comes To Congressional Investigations’

During his Fox News show on Sunday night, former Republican congressman Trey Gowdy blasted “partisan” media outlets for not holding House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) accountable after she rejected multiple Republican lawmakers for her House commission investigating the January 6 Capitol riots.

Gowdy Sounds Off

“The DC media tells us they ‘speak truth to power.’ They tell us ‘Democracy Dies in Darkness.’ They tell us they publish ‘All the News that is Fit to Print,’ and a host of other meaningless self-congratulatory platitudes, but they can’t question Pelosi on her open duplicity when it comes to congressional investigations,” Gowdy began.

Gowdy went on to remind his viewers of Pelosi’s questionable history regarding previous high-profile committee placements.

“She put Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., on the Benghazi committee, even though his mind was fully made up, and he did everything he could to protect the Democrat nominee for president,” he argued. “That was his job. Not to interview survivors, not to access information, not to ascertain why the military did not respond in a timely manner, but protect Hillary Clinton. Pelosi picked him despite his bias.”

Gowdy Doubles Down

Not stopping there, Gowdy said that Pelosi also tapped Schiff to investigate former President Donald Trump over Russia collusion allegations, “even though Schiff misstated evidence, prejudged the outcome and claimed to have evidence he never produced.”

“She picked Schiff to lead the prosecution in a failed impeachment trial, even though Schiff misstated facts, misrepresented a meeting with the whistleblower, and manufactured evidence during a committee hearing…Pelosi picked him anyway,” he continued.

Months after that, Pelosi let Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) keep his seat on the House Intelligence Committee even though reports came out that he’d had a close relationship with a Chinese spy.

Despite this, Pelosi rejected Trump allies Republican Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Jim Banks (R-IN) from her commission investigating the Capitol riot.

“There is not a single cop, prosecutor or judge who would be allowed to remain on those cases if he or she did what Schiff, Swalwell… or the others did. Not one,” Gowdy said. “She picked her own biased members but she rejected Jim Jordan. Jordan is the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, he was on the Intelligence Committee, which has more access to more sensitive information than any committee in Congress.”

Gowdy Let’s Loose

That’s when Gowdy really went off on Pelosi.

“Jordan has participated in previous investigations, he worked hard, and he didn’t leak, which is more than I could say for many of his colleagues,” Gowdy said. “But whether you like Jim Jordan or not is irrelevant, whether you think the previous investigations or even the current investigations are appropriate is beside the point, Congress has the power and often responsibility to investigate, it should be fair.”

“It is fair to ask, why Democrat members of congress are free to prejudge evidence…run against the person they are investigating….and yet they are qualified for service on an investigative committee, but Jim Jordan is not?” he questioned.

“That is the question,” he added. “Why Schiff and not Jordan? Why Swalwell and not Jordan? Why is it your members can have their minds already made up, but somehow that is disqualifying for the other side?”

“It’s the sort of question a serious objective media would ask.… but the modern media in this country is just as partisan as politicians themselves,” he concluded. “‘Truth to Power,’ they claim. ‘Democracy Dies in Darkness,’ they claim. Well,” he said, “it doesn’t do well in the slew of hypocrisy either, that is where we are right now, and in no small part because the referee is just as partisan as the players.

Pelosi Refuses To Allow Trump Allies On Capitol Investigation – McCarthy Pulls Every Republican In Response

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected the recommendations of Representatives Jim Jordan and Jim Banks to serve on the select committee investigating the January 6 riot at the Capitol, prompting House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy to pull every Republican pick from the committee.

McCarthy even threatened to hold his own investigation of the events if Pelosi didn’t reverse course.

Earlier this week, McCarthy announced that he had chosen five Republican Representatives to serve on the committee – Jordan (OH), Banks (IN), Rodney Davis (IL), Kelly Armstrong (AL), and Troy Nehls (TX).

Banks, who along with Jordan and Nehls objected to certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election, had been chosen to serve as the ranking member.

Jordan is a staunch and very vocal ally of former President Trump.

Pelosi (D-CA) decided she couldn’t have individuals with opposing viewpoints on the committee, rejecting Banks and Jordan.

Pelosi Refuses To Allow Jim Jordan, Jim Banks On ‘Bipartisan’ Select Committee

Nancy Pelosi’s decision to reject the opposition party’s selections to serve on a select committee is probably expected by most of our readers.

“With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan,” she announced.

The move prompted McCarthy to hold a press conference noting that Banks and Jordan currently serve on other standing committees and accusing Pelosi of a power grab.

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi has taken the unprecedented step of denying the minority party’s picks for the Select Committee on January 6,” McCarthy said in a statement.

“This represents an egregious abuse of power and will irreparably damage this institution,” he continued.

“Denying the voices of members who have served in the military and law enforcement, as well as leaders of standing committees, has made it undeniable that this panel has lost all legitimacy and credibility and shows the Speaker is more interested in playing politics than seeking the truth,” McCarthy said.

He added that if Pelosi doesn’t reverse course, he would be pulling every Republican off the committee and pursuing “our own investigation of the facts.”

Liz Cheney Praises Pelosi

Anti-Trump Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY), the only Republican picked by Pelosi to serve on the committee due to her anti-Trump history, naturally sang the praises of the House Speaker for her naked partisanship.

“At every opportunity, the minority leader has attempted to prevent the American people from understanding what happened, to block this investigation,” she said.

Cheney, who had her leadership role stripped due to an inability to focus on representing the Republican Party as opposed to her hatred of the former President, suggested McCarthy should no longer be the House GOP leader.

“Any person who would be third in line to the presidency must demonstrate a commitment to the Constitution and a commitment to the rule of law, and Minority Leader McCarthy has not done that,” she railed.

Had Cheney opted for an intelligent response, she would have at least tangentially criticized Pelosi for the move and promoted the charade that the two were interested in a fair and balanced select committee.

Even before Pelosi’s decision, Banks and Jordan were hammering away at the select committee’s seriousness, or lack thereof.

Jordan referred to it as “impeachment, round three,” while Banks accused Pelosi of creating the committee “solely to malign conservatives and to justify the Left’s authoritarian agenda.”

It should be noted that Pelosi’s decision seems to hinge in part on the fact that Jordan and Banks objected to certifying the election results, something Democrats have insisted contributed to the protest at the Capitol.

In fact, Cheney alluded to this in her response suggesting Jordan “may be a material witness to events that lead to that day.”

Somebody may want to ask Cheney and Pelosi about the presence of Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) on the select committee in that case.

Democrats, including Raskin, tried objecting to the certification of electoral votes for Donald Trump in 2017 on 11 separate occasions.

Using the Democrat Party’s own standard today, one could argue that the constant insistence that Trump didn’t really win the election in 2016 led to an incitement of violence on his inauguration day.

McCarthy Picks Jim Jordan, Other Trump Allies For Pelosi’s January 6 Select Committee

Jim Jordan, a staunch ally of former President Trump, is among the five Republicans chosen to serve on Nancy Pelosi’s select committee created to investigate the January 6th Capitol protest.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy made the announcement Monday evening.

Joining Jordan (R-OH) on the select committee are GOP Reps. Jim Banks (IN), Rodney Davis (IL), Kelly Armstrong (AL), and Troy Nehls (TX).

Banks will serve as the ranking member as “a rising star who is serving this cycle as chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee,” according to The Hill.

Jordan, Banks Named To Select Committee

Banks responded to being named ranking member on the select committee by promising to find “the facts about the lead up to January 6 … and the responses from Capitol leadership and the Biden administration.”

“Make no mistake, Nancy Pelosi created this committee solely to malign conservatives and to justify the Left’s authoritarian agenda,” he added.

Jim Jordan responded to his addition to the select committee by posting a video of Democrats objecting to Trump’s election victory in 2016, as well as those fomenting the Russia collusion conspiracy.

All five voted against impeaching Trump for his alleged role in the Capitol protest.

‘Impeachment – Round Three’

Jordan appeared on Newsmax to discuss his role on the select committee and also noted that Pelosi’s decision to create a select committee is political in nature.

“We know what this is – this is impeachment, round three,” he claimed. “This is to go after President Trump.”

Jordan went on to point out that Democrats don’t want the focus to be on the Biden administration and their party’s absolute failures of governance – including inflation, the economy, and the border crisis.

“So what are they going to do?” he asked facetiously. “Go after President Trump. The most successful President in our lifetime.”

Forbes reports that even with McCarthy’s choices for the select committee, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “has the final say over appointments to the panel.”

“The text of the resolution creating the committee … allows Pelosi to appoint all 13 members of the committee, including five ‘after consultation’ with McCarthy,” they explain.

Earlier this month, Pelosi named her own eight choices to serve on the select committee.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) was the only Republican selected by Pelosi due to her anti-Trump history.

The Republican celebrated her addition to the panel.

“Congress is obligated to conduct a full investigation of the most serious attack on our Capitol since 1814,” she said.

“That day saw the most sacred space in our Republic overrun by an angry and violent mob attempting to stop the counting of electoral votes and threatening the peaceful transfer of power.”

Democrats tried objecting to the certification of electoral votes for Donald Trump in 2017 on 11 separate occasions according to CNN.
