Trump poll shows impeachment backlash hitting Cheney

Donald Trump’s political operation has commissioned a poll on Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney’s reelection prospects, part of an effort to punish the most high-profile Republican who supported impeaching the former president earlier this month.

The survey paints a bleak picture of Cheney’s political standing as she faces fierce backlash from Trump supporters over her impeachment vote, with House conservatives mounting an effort to oust her from party leadership, the Wyoming Republican Party condemning her, and primary challengers lining up.

According to a memo outlining the results, 73 percent of Republican voters and 62 percent of all voters in Wyoming expressed an unfavorable view of the three-term congresswoman. Just 10 percent of Republican primary voters and 13 percent of general election voters said they would vote to reelect her. The survey of 500 likely voters, which was conducted Jan. 25-26 by Trump pollster John McLaughlin, also presents Cheney as profoundly weak in a Republican primary. The congress member trails 54 percent to 21 percent in a head-to-head matchup against one of her announced opponents, state Sen. Anthony Bouchard.

“Liz Cheney’s decision to vote to impeach President Trump makes her extremely vulnerable,” McLaughlin writes to Jason Miller, the former president’s senior adviser, in a memo outlining the results. “It is evident her ratings are in bad shape among general election voters and have collapsed among Republicans and Trump voters.”

A Cheney spokesperson declined to comment.

The survey, which was paid for by Save America, Trump’s newly formed political action committee, is designed to embolden would-be primary challengers to the 10 House Republicans who backed impeachment. Trump advisers say there is a deep desire to support Republican candidates looking to knock off those incumbents in next year’s primaries.

“The strong voter sentiment in this survey suggests there could be similar results for other Republicans who voted for impeachment,” McLaughlin writes in the memo.

In an implicit warning to the GOP impeachment supporters, as well as any Republican senator considering whether to convict the former president for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill insurrection, the memo also touts Trump’s popularity in heavily Republican Wyoming since leaving office. The former president registers a 70 percent favorability rating in the state, the same share of the vote he received in the 2020 election. Among Republican voters, Trump has an 85 percent favorable figure.

Cheney delivered a scorching statement following the Jan. 6 riot, saying that as part of his effort to overturn the 2020 election results, Trump “summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack." Cheney added that “there has never been a greater betrayal by a president of the United States of his office and his oath to the constitution.”

The poll also illustrated how a rush of primary challengers could ultimately end up playing into Cheney’s hands, creating a crowded field that would splinter the vote against her. Cheney performed slightly better when the poll tested a three-way Republican primary between Cheney, Bouchard and state Rep. Chuck Gray, a Republican who isn’t yet running. The survey showed Cheney and Gray at 19 percent and Bouchard at 29 percent.

Pelosi Calls On Democrat Lawmakers To ‘Write Their Stories’ Of Capitol Riots

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) sent a letter to her fellow Democrat lawmakers on Wednesday urging them to “write your story of January 6,” referring to the Capitol riots.

Pelosi Pens Letter To Democrats Regarding Capitol Riots

“Today also marks three weeks since the insurrection against the U.S. Capitol and against our Democracy,” Pelosi wrote, according to The Hill. “I urge all Members to take advantage of this time to write your story of January 6.”

“I also hope you have taken advantage of the trauma and resilience resources provided by the Office of Employee Assistance, and I encourage you to do so if you have not. Members have told me that they have found these resources to be beneficial,” she added.

Pelosi led the charge in the House impeaching Donald Trump for a second time for allegedly inciting the Capitol riots. A Senate impeachment trial has been scheduled to take place on February 8, and if he is impeached there, he will not be allowed to run for office again.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has described the Capitol riots as a “pretty traumatizing event,” going so far as to say that she thought she was “going to die” at one point. She has also indicated that she will be receiving counseling to deal with the trauma she supposedly suffered from during this event.

Pelosi Claims They’re Doing Work ‘For The People’

Pelosi concluded her letter with some encouraging words for her Democratic colleagues, claiming that the work that they are doing is “for the people.”

“As we continue our work For The People, we must do so prayerfully, solemnly and courageously,” wrote Pelosi.

“Let us draw faith and inspiration from the closing words of the poem that Amanda Gorman shared with the nation one week ago: ‘For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we’re brave enough to be it,'” she concluded.

Pelosi has previously said that she is “not worried” that impeaching Trump will undercut the message of unity that President Joe Biden claims to want to push.

“No, I’m not worried about that,” Pelosi said. “The fact is the president of the United States committed an act of incitement of insurrection. I don’t think it’s very unifying to say, ‘Oh, let’s just forget it and move on.’”

Pro-Trump CEO Censured By Goya Foods Board For Questioning Results Of Election

Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue has officially been censured by his board, which voted to muzzle him after the pro-Trump CEO questioned the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Unanue Censured For Questioning Election Results

The nine-member board of Goya Foods voted to censor Unanue last Friday by a majority vote, according to the New York Post. They did this after Unanue, 67, described the results of the election as “unverified” on the day Joe Biden was inaugurated.

“I think this is mission accomplished. Mission accomplished by the union, the partnership, the conglomerate of social media, Big Tech, big media, and government, big government, for ushering in the dawn of a new world order — this great reset — with an unverified election, and the big prize is the United States,” Unanue told Fox Business on January 20.

This was reportedly the last straw for board members, who initiated the process of a censure vote just two days later. Their vote to censure him means that Unanue will no longer be allowed to speak to the media without the board’s permission.

“Bob does not speak for Goya Foods when he speaks on TV,” Goya board member and third-generation owner Andy Unanue said before the vote. “The family has diverse views on politics, but politics is not part of our business. Our political point of views are irrelevant.”

An anonymous source told CNN that this vote was a “full stop” on Unanue speaking to the media about both politics and the company itself, claiming that “his statements are insulting and dangerous.”

Unanue Responds

Unanue has confirmed that he has been censured, although he refused to comment on it directly for obvious reasons. Instead, he claimed that he would refrain from publicizing his political views in the future.

“Independently, I’ve made the decision to lower the temperature and walk away from speaking about politics and religion,” he said. “I realize it’s important because of the diverse views of the company and our market.”

“I don’t believe I should speak politically or in a faith-based manner on behalf of the company,” Unanue added. “But I leave open the possibility of speaking on behalf of myself.”

Newt Gingrich Eviscerates Pelosi – ‘Most Destructive Speaker In History’

Former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich spoke out this week to eviscerate the current Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), going so far as to say that she is the “most destructive speaker in history.”

Gingrich Lets Loose On Pelosi

Gingrich said this during an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, who asked him, “You said Nancy Pelosi is the most destructive speaker ever. Really quickly, why?”

“First off, she keeps violating the Constitution,” Gingrich replied, according to Daily Mail. “The latest impeachment is just a simple example.”

“She uses her power ruthlessly and she has really pushed through the most radical positions ever taken by an American Speaker, including abolishing mother and father and uncle and aunt and son and daughter as words, literally trying to strip out any gender reference from the House of Representatives,” he added. “I think she’s very dangerous.”

Ingraham sarcastically responded by saying, “But she is an ardent practicing Catholic, so you cannot criticize her.”

Gingrich Criticized Pelosi Days Before

This came two days after Gingrich made similar comments about Pelosi in a separate Fox News interview.

“She lives in an enclave that is guarded in San Francisco,” Gingrich explained. “She is surrounded by left-wing looney tunes who think that it’s OK to live in a city where … there’s a map you can go to on the internet that shows you where feces were.”

“They don’t distinguish dog and human, but they’ll show you the feces count that day around San Francisco,” he continued.

“This is the same problem with [Vice President] Kamala Harris,” Gingrich said. “They come from the center of left-wing nuttiness, and all their friends at the local country club or all their friends when they go to a cocktail party, think this craziness makes sense.”

Not stopping there, Gingrich added that Pelosi “has been in politics so long that she operates like a genuine machine politician of the old order.”

“And she doesn’t mind abusing power,” he explained. ‘She doesn’t mind running over people … she’s so willing to break the rules and to, frankly, just say things that are totally untrue.”

Gingrich Doubles Down

Host Mark Levin marveled at the “gall” Pelosi had when she outrageously claimed that the House impeaching Trump “unites the country.”

“It’s also interesting how the press react to her when she has a press conference,” Levin said. “You dare step out of line and ask her a tough question, she dismisses you, she diminishes you, and they don’t start yelling questions at her.”

“Well, what you have right now with the press corps are left-wing lapdogs,” Gingrich replied. “And their job is to go over and lick the hand of the left-wingers and then try to bite the Republicans.”

“So that’s their duty,” he concluded. “I mean, they’re just behaving like they’ve been trained to behave.”

CNN’s Jake Tapper Accuses Republicans Of Trying To Remove Clinton For Lying But Not Trump For Inciting A ‘Terrorist Attack’

CNN’s Jake Tapper had a full meltdown on Tuesday about Senate Republicans voting that the impeachment trial against former President Donald Trump was unconstitutional, accusing them of having a “different standard” than they did with Bill Clinton.

Tapper Goes Off on Republicans

“It is just so strange because, look, I’m not a constitutional scholar,” Tapper said. “I don’t have an opinion on this, but a lot of people who are voting to not have any consequences for Donald Trump are doing so not because of constitutionality but because they don’t want to hold Donald Trump to any sort of standard, and they never have.”

“Some of these are the same people who are like vote to deny government assistance to somebody because they test positive for drugs,” he added. “They believe in consequences for everybody else but the president.”

“The outgoing president, former president, can literally incite an insurrection on the Capitol to hold on to power, to subvert democracy, and they don’t think there should be consequences,” Tapper continued.

Tapper Doubles Down

Not stopping there, Tapper proceeded to double down with his unhinged attack on Republicans.

“So if they don’t believe that an impeachment trial is constitutional, you know, that’s obviously a legal position and legal argument, but if you don’t believe that, then what consequence?” he continued. “What consequence should there be? Or do you think that some people are just above the law?”

“I mean, should there be a criminal trial?” Tapper added. I mean, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy, for that matter, have said that Donald Trump played a role in the terrorist attack. He played a role.”

“I mean, Bill Clinton lied under oath, and they thought that there needed to be— he needed to be removed from office for lying under oath,” the CNN host concluded. “Donald Trump incites a terrorist attack, and they have a different standard.”

No attack on Republicans is too below the belt for Tapper. Earlier this month, he said that “there are Republican members of Congress I know who clearly have lost their minds, who just will not accept reality when it comes to the facts about Donald Trump.”

McCarthy urges House Republicans to stop attacking each other publicly

House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday implored Republicans to stop publicly attacking each other amid GOP infighting over the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riots, which has created simmering tensions inside the conference.

During a private conference call, McCarthy told members that they should be spending more time countering the Biden agenda than chastising each other, adding he would no longer have any tolerance for such behavior, according to multiple sources on the call. McCarthy also reminded House Republicans that they will have an opportunity to air their grievances during a closed-door meeting in the Capitol next week, where a conservative-led push to oust Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) over her vote to impeach President Donald Trump is expected to come to a head.

“If you’re not focused on what you’re doing and what the Democrats are doing wrong, and you’re focused on talking about one another, I’m not putting up with that anymore,” McCarthy said on the call, according to a source familiar with the conversation. “But, if you continue to do that, there won’t be a place for you. I want to be very clear to each and every one of you. … It is not a way we’re going to win the majority.”

“You elected me your leader, you can pull me out,” he added. “But I’ll tell you one thing that’s going to happen. I’m not going to sit back and watch us lose. I’m not going to sit back and watch us make self-inflicted wounds either.”

McCarthy issued a similar plea two weeks ago, warning Republicans that calling out a member by name to the press could put their colleagues in danger. There has been an uptick in threats against Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump; one lawmaker who voted to remove Trump from office, freshman Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.), even said he’s had to invest in body armor.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) has also quarreled with controversial freshman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Twitter, posting that Greene’s rhetoric could incite further insurrections.

Much of the fighting, however, has focused on Cheney, the No. 3 House GOP member. Republicans have warned that efforts to oust Cheney, the highest ranking woman in GOP leadership, could hurt the party’s efforts to win back the House in 2022.

Some House Republicans have ignored McCarthy’s advice and the intraparty warfare has continued publicly, to the frustration of the California Republican. It’s unclear, however, how exactly he plans to hold members accountable.

The Cheney question has become almost unavoidable in the press, with McCarthy himself being asked about her in a Sunday interview with Greta Van Susteren. And while McCarthy said he wants Cheney to keep her leadership job, he, too, offered up some public criticism of her during the interview: McCarthy said he has “concerns” with Cheney’s impeachment vote and called her out for not giving him a heads up on her position.

Meanwhile, conservative firebrand Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who has been one of the most vocal Cheney critics, will even campaign against Cheney in Wyoming this week.

“My only conversation with Kevin McCarthy, was after a TV hit, he asked me not to name members by name because we've all seen a substantial increase of death threats,” Gaetz told reporters this week. “I've subsided referencing people by name for a day or two. As Liz became more problematic with her divergence with the conference, it became untenable not to identify her as against the America First Vision.”

During Wednesday's call with House Republicans, which was hosted by the House GOP's campaign, multiple members pledged money to the NRCC. And McCarthy, who is fundraising in Florida this week, will meet with Trump on Thursday, sources confirmed. Those plans were first reported by Punchbowl News.
