Fox News Politics: Dems’ age-old question

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's Happening?

- Ex-Hunter Biden associate testifies to House panel

- House prepares to vote on Biden border chief impeachment

- New York's 3rd district voting on a replacement for ex-Rep George Santos

Democrats have overwhelmingly backed President Biden's 2024 re-election. But the damaging report released last week by Special Counsel Robert Hur has breathed new life into the belief that the party will ultimately replace him as nominee ahead of the 2024 general election.

Here are five of the top names being mentioned as a potential replacement for Biden should he decide — or is pressured — not to run for a second term:

1. California Gov. Gavin Newsom

Democrat strategists and members of the media continually mention him as a future presidential hopeful, but that future could come sooner rather than later should Biden's plans change.

2. Vice President Harris

Harris' presidential ambitions have been known since her first unsuccessful run for the White House in 2020, when she failed to gain support over her Democrat primary opponents, including Biden. Despite her low approval rating and frequent gaffes as vice president, she continues to insist she's "ready to serve" as commander in chief, if necessary.

3. Former first lady Michelle Obama

Obama has been one of the more surprising names floated as a potential replacement for Biden, considering her lack of political experience. But she remains popular to Democrats, and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy keeps floating the possibility.

4. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

Despite declining a run for the White House, Whitmer appeared to leave the door open for a future presidential run after her convincing re-election win during the 2022 midterm elections, a year that was expected to be a difficult one for Democrats.

5. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear

Beshear has been seen as a rising star within the party given his status as one of the most popular governors in the country, despite being a Democrat leading a red state. That status grew following a big re-election win last year over then-Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, who was considered a rising GOP star.

Fox News Politics: Losing to ‘none of these’

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's Happening?

- Senate tanks border deal

- McConnell scoffs at GOP critics as deal collapses

- Biden leads Trump in 2024 poll if the former president is convicted

During Nevada's unusual dual primary-caucus election, Nikki Haley was the only candidate on the GOP primary ballot. Despite that, she suffered a landslide loss against another option on the ballot as about two thirds of Republican voters selected "None of these candidates."

Nevada's Tuesday primary had a Democratic and a Republican ballot, but the GOP isn't awarding any delegates from the election. Instead, Nevada Republicans will hold its traditional caucuses on Thursday — where Haley will not be on the ballot.

Haley's did not spend any measurable money or resources on campaigning in Nevada, but the symbolic loss was quickly used against her.

A number of Trump's supporters took to X to rub salt in Haley's wound, including former 2020 Trump campaign official Marc Lotter, who wrote: "Nikki Haley lost New Hampshire by 11% to Trump. Nikki Haley lost Nevada by 30% to LITERALLY NO ONE! Nikki Haley is losing [her] home state by 27%. How does she go on?"

Fox News Politics: Border nonstarter

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's Happening?

- Senate Republicans vow to block bipartisan border bill

- Court rejects Trump's immunity on Jan. 6 charges

- Nevada primary election underway

After weeks of negotiations, the Senate's much ballyhooed bipartisan border deal landed with a thunk.

Conservatives in the House and Senate have come out against the deal, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell didn't sound optimistic about the bill becoming law.

"I think in the end, even though the product is approved by the the border council that adores President Trump, most of our members feel that we're not going to be able to make a law here, and if we're not going to be able to make a law, they're reluctant to go forward," McConnell said Tuesday. The border bill was tied to aide to Ukraine and other priorities that McConnell and Schumer would have to find another way to pass.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said the border deal fiasco might mean it's time for McConnell himself to step down as leader.

Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas revealed that he didn't know President Biden would start describing the border situation as a "crisis," according to reports.

"I will tell you that I am not focused on the words one uses," Mayorkas told the Washington Post. "I am focused on what we need to do. That is my focus. It is a very serious challenge. And we are focused on it every single day."

The House is moving forward with a vote to impeach Mayorkas.

Fox News Politics: President Potty Mouth

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's Happening?

- Biden admin sent money to Hamas-linked group soon after Oct. 7 attack

- Texas holding the line

- Haley and Trump trade shots

President Biden's thoughts about former President Trump appear to be more vulgar behind closed doors than in public, despite him and other Democrats routinely calling for "civility" and "decency" in politics.

During conversations with his confidantes, Biden lets his temper flare and refers to Trump as a "sick f---" among other expletives, according to reports this week.

On Biden's first day in office, he lectured his staff about the importance of respect: "I am not joking when I say this, if you are ever working with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, I promise you I will fire you on the spot. On the spot. No ifs, ands or buts," he said.

What's Happening?

- Biden family money man testifies at closed-door House hearing

- Speaker Johnson facing rebellion from moderate Republicans

- Supreme Court Justice speaks out on job frustrations

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday took aim at what he called "baseless" and "false" allegations leveled against him by House Republicans who are preparing a vote to advance articles of impeachment against him.

"I assure you that your false accusations do not rattle me and do not divert me from the law enforcement and broader public service mission to which I have devoted most of my career and to which I remain devoted," Mayorkas said in a lengthy letter to House Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green.

The committee is meeting to advance two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, accusing him of refusing to follow immigration law and of breaching public trust. A vote is expected later in the day, likely along party lines, moving the articles to a House vote at a future date.

President Biden has expressed frustration at the turn of events. On the border, he said that he's done all that he can do, but needs more authority. "… just give me the power," Biden said.

Fox News Politics: Jury orders Trump to pay massive damages

What's happening?

- GOP moves to defund sanctuary cities

- Biden approval rating hits rock bottom

- Dem calls out soft-on-crime prosecutors

Former President Trump was ordered to pay over $83 million in damages to E. Jean Carroll after she sued him for what she called defamatory statements following her accusation that he sexually assaulted her.

The trial was not about whether Trump sexually assaulted Carroll – a jury in a Manhattan civil trial last year already found Trump liable for the alleged assault, which Trump vehemently denies.

"Absolutely ridiculous!" Trump wrote on Truth Social after the verdict came down. "I fully disagree with both verdicts, and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party," Trump posted on his TRUTH Social shortly after the verdict was read. "Our Legal System is out of control, and being used as a Political Weapon. They have taken away all First Amendment Rights."

Trump added: "THIS IS NOT AMERICA!"

What's Happening?

- Trump testifies briefly in defamation trial against him

- Biden administration warned Iran before ISIS attack

- Influential Senate moderate refuses to back Trump

Top Republican governors from across the U.S. voiced their support for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as he defies President Biden in an effort to stem the flow of illegal immigration across the U.S.-Mexico border as Democrats demand Biden federalize the Texas national guard.

Abbott is fighting multiple legal battles with the Biden administration, which has threatened legal action over Texas’ seizure of Shelby Park near Eagle Pass. Texas has also filed lawsuits against the administration, which cut razor wire set up by the state on the Rio Grande to prevent migrants from illegally crossing into Texas, as well as the establishment of buoys on the river.

"The Executive Branch of the United States has a constitutional duty to enforce federal laws protecting states, including immigration laws on the books right now," Abbott said. "President Biden has refused to enforce those laws and has even violated them."

Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, called on Biden to federalize the National Guard on Tuesday after it became clear Abbott wasn't backing down. When asked whether the White House was considering this, Jack Kirby said, "We talked about this the other day. I don't have any decisions to speak to for the president. I don't have anything on that."

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, North Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, and Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt have all declared that they stand with Texas and vowed to aid them in various ways.

What's Happening?

- President Trump participates in Fox News town hall at 9 p.m. ET

- Clinton, Newsom seen in Mexico amid Epstein doc drops

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie suspended his presidential campaign, saying "it's clear to me tonight that there isn't a path for me to win the nomination."

Hunter Biden unexpectedly appeared with his attorneys at the House Oversight Committee's meeting Wednesday morning to consider the resolution that would set up a full House vote on whether to hold him in contempt of Congress for defying a congressional subpoena as part of the House impeachment inquiry against President Biden.

Biden and his attorneys Abbe Lowell and Kevin Morris came to Capitol Hill to sit in the audience as lawmakers on the panel considered whether to pass the resolution out of committee. Biden and his attorneys ultimately left before the vote on the resolution.

In the chaos that unfolded as Biden walked out, reporters peppered him with questions while an unidentified man shouted asked him, "Are you on crack today?"

What's Happening?

- More big names revealed in Epstein court docs

- Fox News hosts town hall with DeSantis in Iowa

- Gov. Newsom declares special election to replace Kevin McCarthy

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin went into the ICU on Jan. 1, but the White House, Congress and the rest of the world did find out until days later — while the cabinet member was still in intensive care.

Now, Austin has announced that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer — another detail that the White House didn't know about. What he initially referred to as an elective procedure was actually a prostatectomy he had last month, which led to complications.

The White House on Tuesday said the way the whole situation, and the president being in the dark about his own secretary of defense's medical condition, was "not optimal." Still, the White House is standing by Austin.

The Pentagon said Monday that Austin's chief of staff was sick with the flu, which led to the breakdown in communication. There are mounting calls for Austin's ouster.

- Biden gets torched by allies over Israel funding

- NYC Mayor admits migrants bring crime

A federal judge on Tuesday dismissed most of the civil counts against former President Donald Trump and two others in connection with the death of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick during the U.S. Capitol riots on Jan. 6.

In a 12-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta dismissed three of the five civil counts in a lawsuit filed last January by Sandra Garza, Sicknick's girlfriend.

The lawsuit sought damages from all three men for claims of wrongful death, conspiracy to violate civil rights, and negligence per se based on D.C.'s anti-riot law.
