Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

-Critics mock Biden for cannibalism story

-GOP rebels threaten more chaos over Ukraine spending

-Polish president meets Trump amid criminal trial

Twelve New Yorkers have been selected to decide Trump's guilt or innocence in hush money charges from Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg's prosecution.

The third day of jury selection (the court is not in session on Wednesdays) started with seven seated jurors. That fell five after one juror admitted that, upon further consideration, she could not be impartial and another was dismissed after it was discovered he was once arrested for ripping down right-leaning political posters.

But the court still needs to find several alternate jurors, a process that will resume on Friday.

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

- Democrats express openness to saving Speaker Mike Johnson

- Seven jurors have been selected in Trump's trial

- Far left reps launch "Protect the Squad" fundraising effort

In the Senate, the impeachment trial was over practically before it began.

Before House managers even presented the articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Democrats in a series of party-line votes dismissed the matter altogether.

The first of two articles of impeachment alleged Mayorkas engaged in the "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law" regarding the southern border in his capacity as DHS secretary. The second claimed Mayorkas had breached public trust.

"This process must not be abused. It must not be short-circuited. History will not judge this moment well," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., as he motioned to table the point of order from Schumer.

House Republicans on Wednesday grilled Columbia University president on the employment of a professor who celebrated the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks as "awesome." The university president at first said the professor had been removed as chair of a committee, but Rep. Elise Stefanik pointed out he was still listed in that role online. Columbia's president later promised that the prof would be removed as chair, if he still served in the role.

Fox News Politics: Unbiased juror quest

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

- White House says Biden will not testify in Hunter's business investigations

- Fetterman calls out anti-Israeli agitators in profanity-laced social media post

- Soros nonprofit becomes huge spender in 2024 election

The second day of jury selection in former President Trump’s Manhattan criminal trial saw a similar dynamic play out: Many New Yorkers don't think they can be impartial when it comes to the presumptive Republican nominee.

More than 50 of the original 96 prospective jurors were excused Monday, some of them admitting they could not serve as impartial jurors. Several were excused due to other issues.

On Tuesday, several more were dismissed from the pool of nearly 100. Some said that after further consideration, they simply did not think they could be impartial towards the divisive former president.

Nevertheless, six jurors were sworn in by late Tuesday afternoon — one half of the 12 needed. The court will also select a handful of alternate jurors.

One of the jurors excused (for scheduling reasons) told reporters outside the courtroom that though she was not a fan of Trump, she believed she could have been impartial in the trial. "Everyone was really taking it upon themselves to step in and do civic duty here, regardless of what people came into it thinking about the defendant," the excused juror said.

Fox News Politics: FISA flops

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

-Biden hints at executive order which will close the border

-Senate GOP readies for battle if Senate Dems reject Mayorkas impeachment

-Texas Democrat proposes Black Americans should not pay taxes as a form of reparations

More than a dozen House GOP privacy hawks have blocked the House of Representatives from advancing a Speaker Mike Johnson-backed bill to renew a controversial federal government surveillance tool known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

It comes hours after former President Trump posted on Truth Social, "KILL FISA, IT WAS ILLEGALLY USED AGAINST ME AND MANY OTHERS."

Nineteen Republicans voted against their party leadership to tank a procedural vote that would have allowed for the House to debate and then vote on the bill itself. The final vote was 193 to 228.

The House Judiciary Committee backed an amendment that would force U.S. officials to seek a warrant before querying communications made by an American, which national security-minded Republicans have largely opposed.

Multiple sources told Fox News Digital that Johnson spoke out against the amendment during a closed-door meeting with fellow House Republicans on Wednesday, spurring anger from GOP hardliners.

Fox News Politics: Pro-life punt

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

- Lone Star Republican urges New York law enforcement to come to Texas

- McConnell brands himself a ‘Reagan Republican’ in pursuing Ukrainian aid

- Child sex predators could face the death penalty under proposed bill

Former President Trump disappointed the strongest pro-life voices on the right with his Monday statement that abortion restrictions should be left up to the states. Trump's former vice president, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, both strongly disagreed with the presumptive GOP nominee's stance.

But despite declining to commit to supporting a 15-week federal abortion ban, pro-life activists still appear to view Trump as their best bet in November.

"The reality of a stark choice between President Biden who supports abortion: any number, any reason, up until birth, all paid for by the taxpayer and President Trump: who gave us three Constitutionalist justices, 220 lower court judges, appointees who support life and the overturn of Roe v. Wade has my endorsement and support in November for President," said Penny Nance, CEO of Concerned Women for America (CWA), who said she "favors federal limits on abortion."

Trump told Fox News' Howard Kurtz that the states should decide what limits (if any) to place on abortion — but he also did not deny reports suggesting that he would consider protecting life after 16-weeks of pregnancy.

Fox News Politics: Day of double denials

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

- Jill Biden reportedly urging husband to end the war in Gaza

- Vulnerable Senate Dems at further risk from Mayoraks impeachment

- Democratic Governor to decide on making coercive abortion a felony

Former President Donald Trump has suffered two defeats in his court cases as judges in Georgia and Florida struck down motions from his legal team.

In Georgia, former President Donald Trump's motion to dismiss his 2020 election interference indictment on the grounds of First Amendment protection was rejected on Thursday.

"After considering the extensive briefing, the argument of counsel, and the indictment, the Court finds these vital constitutional protections do not reach the actions and statements alleged by the State. Nor do the statutes themselves facially violate the First Amendment," Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee ruled Thursday.

"They argue this prosecution violates the First Amendment’s protections of political speech and activity, freedom of association, and the right to petition Congress as-applied to their alleged conduct, and further contend that the indicted charges are overbroad," he said.

In Florida, the federal judge presiding over former President Trump’s classified records case on Thursday denied his motion to dismiss the charges based on the Presidential Records Act.

U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, last month, also dismissed Trump's motion to dismiss charges of retaining classified documents on the grounds of "unconstitutional vagueness."

Fox News Politics: Trump mourns fallen officer

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

-Biden has stopped promoting ‘Bidenomics’ despite still insisting it works

-Speaker Johnson set dates for delivering Mayorkas impeachment date to Senate

-Chris Christie shuts down consideration for ‘No Labels’ candidacy

Former President Donald Trump attended the wake of slain NYPD officer Jonathan Diller Thursday afternoon at a Massapequa Park funeral home, while calling for law and order.

"Such a sad, sad event. Such a horrible thing. And it's happening all too often and we're just not going to let it happen," Trump said.

"We need law and order," Trump added.

Diller was fatally shot on Monday during a traffic stop in Queens after a man with 21 prior arrests allegedly shot him in the stomach as Diller was trying to get the suspect, Guy Rivera, 34, to exit the vehicle. Rivera opened fire on Diller and his partner at about 5:45 p.m. Monday. The officers approached the vehicle because it was illegally parked at a bus stop.

Diller was 31 years old and lived in Massapequa Park with his wife and nearly 1-year-old son, Fox News Digital previously reported. He had served three years with the NYPD before his death.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday that Biden had spoken with Adams about the death, adding she did not have "private communications to share" regarding whether Biden had spoken to Diller's family.

Fox News Politics: Battleground Democrat retreats from House

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

-Obama reportedly contacting Biden's team regularly over potential 2024 loss

-How Eagle Pass became the center of the Biden-Abbott feud

-Fetterman offers rare sit down interview with Fox News

In a surprise announcement, longtime Democratic Rep. Annie Kuster of New Hampshire says she won’t seek re-election to the House of Representatives this year.

"I always said I was not going to stay in Congress forever – I will not be seeking re-election in 2024," the six-term representative in the key general election battleground state said in a statement released on Wednesday.

Kuster, an attorney and lobbyist with clients in the health care and pharmaceutical industry before winning election to the House in 2012, highlighted that her tenure in Congress "has been many things – rewarding, frustrating, inspiring, and challenging. But, more than anything, it has been an honor."

Republicans aim to defend their razor-thin House majority in November's elections.

The GOP currently holds a slim majority in the House of Representatives. And that has worsened in recent months as some high-profile Republicans are choosing to resign early, well before their term in office ends.

Fox News Politics: Silencing Trump

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

-NYC begins handing out prepaid debit cards to illegal immigrants

New York Judge Juan Merchan has imposed a gag order on former President Trump in the hush-money payments case, set for jury selection on April 15, granting Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's request.

Merchan issued the order against the 2024 GOP presumptive presidential nominee on Tuesday, pointing to his "prior extrajudicial statements," saying they establish "a sufficient risk to the administration of justice."

Merchan ordered that Trump cannot make or direct others to make public statements about witnesses concerning their potential participation, or about counsel in the case — other than Bragg — or about court staff, DA staff or family members of staff.

Merchan also ordered that Trump cannot make or direct others to make public statements about any prospective juror or chosen juror.

Merchan said in his decision that Trump has made statements in the past during other trials — likely referring to the months-long non-jury civil fraud trial stemming from New York Attorney General Letitia James' case.

A spokesperson for Trump's campaign told  Fox News Digital that "American voters have a fundamental right to hear the uncensored voice of the leading candidate for the highest office in the land."

"President Trump will keep fighting for our country and our Constitution," the spokesperson said.

Fox News Politics: Coming after Trump Tower

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

-White House calls Biden impeachment inquiry ‘embarrassing’

-Republicans hit Biden over $110 billion tax hike

-GOP billionaires rally behind Trump as 2024 looms

Lawyers for former President Trump are blasting New York Attorney General Letitia James’ "unconstitutional" attempts to block the GOP presumptive nominee’s appeal and force a property sale as the deadline for him to post hundreds of millions of dollars of bond in the case looms.

Trump and his legal team have appealed and requested a stay on his $464 million civil fraud judgment. On Monday, his lawyers said that "ongoing diligent efforts have proven that a bond in the judgment’s full amount is a ‘practical impossibility,’" amid attempts to approach about 30 surety companies.

James has pushed back, calling Trump’s request for a stay "extraordinary" and "improper." James has said that Trump should be able to secure the entire value via multiple sureties or offer his real estate holdings as collateral.

Trump attorney Clifford S. Robert on Thursday sent a letter to the Appellate Division of New York’s Supreme Court, arguing James’ efforts are "unconstitutional." But ahead of Monday's deadline, Trump's team is looking at all available options.
