Fox News Politics: Bidens under fire

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

-Texas and the Biden administration continue to go to blows over the border

-GOP lawmaker claims Republicans ‘don’t have the guts' to impeach Biden

-Trump proposes a national compromise on abortion

House Republicans are holding a hearing into allegations of influence peddling within President Biden's family and have been questioning two former associates of Hunter Biden, Tony Bobulinski and Jason Galanis.

"Joe Biden has repeatedly claimed that he was not involved Hunter Biden's, Jim Biden's, or any other Biden family business deals. Today our witnesses have proved otherwise," Rep. Nancy Mace said at the conclusion of her questioning.

The hearings got heated as Republicans grilled the witnesses about the Biden family, and Democrats taunted the GOP about having no evidence. They also attempted to shift the narrative to show former President Trump was the true abuser of presidential power. Members from opposing parties squabbled over which side's witness was more untrustworthy — Galanis, testifying from a federal prison about Biden family dealings, or Lev Parnas, who also spent time in prison, and testified that he helped Rudy Giuliani construct false information about alleged Biden family corruption in Ukraine.

Fox News Politics: Texas’ (temporary) SCOTUS win

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

- Biden refuses to recognize his fifth granddaughter born out of wedlock

- Congress reaches spending deal with White House

- Where do the Trump trials stand?

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Texas to enforce a law that allows local police to arrest migrants suspected of crossing the border illegally – marking a significant, but temporary win for the state's efforts to control illegal immigration across the border.

The ruling comes a day after the court extended a block on the state law at the request of the Biden administration, which sued to strike down the measure. The Biden administration argued that the law, known as Senate Bill 4 and signed by Gov. Greg Abbott in December, would usurp federal authority on matters related to immigration enforcement. It marks the most significant effort by a state to take control of enforcement since the Court struck down parts of an Arizona law in 2012.

The case now goes back to the Fifth Circuit again, which could again block the law again, setting up another Supreme Court battle. Abbott called the ruling a "positive development" while acknowledging that there will be hearings in the appeals court.

Fox News Politics: Wade goodbye

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's happening?

- Fulton County Fani Willis' former lover and Nathan Wade pulls out of Trump case

- Haitian migrant arrested on serious charges

- Pro-Palestinian groups rebuff White House's attempts to chat

The judge in the Georgia election interference case has allowed District Attorney Fani Willis to continue leading the prosecution against former President Trump, but strongly admonished her behavior

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee slammed Willis' speech to a church about the matter because it used racially charged rhetoric, was "playing the race card" and overall seemed "legally improper."

Though McAffee declined to disqualify Willis from the case due to her affair with special counsel Nathan Wade and other improprieties, he ruled that Wade would have to be removed from the case — or Willis would need to step back herself.

Later Friday afternoon, Willis withdrew himself. In his resignation letter, he said he would step down "in the interest of democracy," and so that the case could move forward "as quickly as possible."

Willis praised Wade in a written reply, and said she "will always remember" his courage, patriotism and "dedication to justice."

Willis staying on the case wasn't quite the result Trump wanted.

Fox News Politics: Where was Kamala?

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's Happening?

- Fani Willis' disqualification hearing happening Friday afternoon…

- DC voters make their presidential primary pick…

- Harris' shrinking role in migrant crisis

President Biden visited the southern border in Brownsville, Texas, on Thursday, and was joined by a number of top officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, but Vice President Kamala Harris was not among them.

Biden spoke in Brownsville after meeting with Border Patrol, law enforcement and local leaders. He urged Republicans to back a bipartisan Senate bill that he believes will help solve the raging crisis at the southern border.

"It's real simple, it's time to act, it is long past time to act," the president said. "It's time for us to move on this, we can't wait any longer."

But the vice president, who was tasked in 2021 with leading the diplomatic outreach to tackle the "root causes" of migration, was not there.

A year ago, Harris announced an additional $950 million in response to the Call to Action, bringing in a total of more than $4.2 billion since May 2021. But since then, her public role only appears to have continually shrunk, even amid a historic year for illegal immigration, with more than 2.4 million migrant encounters in FY 23. FY 24 has been similarly overwhelming, with over 300,000 encounters in December.

Fox News Politics: McConnell’s ‘sprint to the finish line’

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's Happening?

-Biden makes unannounced visit to Walter Reed Medical Center

-Hunter Biden testifies behind closed doors to Congress as part of impeachment inquiry

-Trump wins Michigan's GOP primary

Longtime Republican leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced Wednesday he will step away from leadership in November.

McConnell, who turned 82 last week, announced his decision in an emotional speech in the Senate shortly after noon.

"One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter," he said. McConnell's first Senate term started in 1985, under the late President Reagan, and McConnell remained a huge fan (despite Reagan at first calling him "Mitch O'Donnell -- Close enough"). But McConnell didn't reminisce much.

"There'll be plenty of time to express my gratitude and greater detail as I sprint towards the finish line, which is now in sight," he said.

McConnell's dramatic decision, which will set up a leadership election in the GOP conference after the November election, comes as Republicans have expressed increasing discontent with McConnell's handling of the bipartisan border bill and national security supplemental package that included aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

McConnell has also butted heads with former President Trump, the 2024 Republican presidential front-runner, who said at a Fox News town hall recently: "I don't know that I can work with [McConnell]."

Yet after McConnell's announcement, gratitude poured in from both McConnell's allies and his critics. "I’m grateful for his service.... I think Mitch's tenure has had many legacies. But no legacy is more consequential than the nomination and confirmation of hundreds of principled constitutionalists to the federal judiciary. And that is a lasting benefit to the American people for which I'm deeply grateful," Texas Sen. Ted Cruz told reporters.

McConnell said he intends to finish his current Senate term, which ends in January 2027. Sources familiar with his thinking told Fox News Digital the senator's health was not a factor in his decision. McConnell had a concussion after a fall last year and two public episodes when he appeared to freeze while addressing reporters.

Fox News Politics: Biden’s Muslim problem

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's Happening?

- Biden calls for ceasefire over ice cream

- Squad member Tlaib proposes paying homeless people $1400/month

- Poll reveals what Americans think of the border crisis

Michigan holds presidential primaries Tuesday, and for once there's more drama on the Democratic side than the GOP.

A campaign to vote "uncommitted" on the Democratic Party's ballot has been gathering steam, fueled by anger over President Biden's support for Israel in its war against Hamas.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. — the first Palestinian-American elected to the U.S. House — has urged Michigan Democrats to vote "uncommitted" in protest of Biden's Israel policy.

Democratic strategist James Carville said Monday that the Michigan protest vote against Biden is a "huge problem" for the party. But how much Biden will be embarrassed by the vote in the Michigan primary today remains to be seen.

"I think we just kinda have to wait until they count the ballots tonight and see what it does and make a determination," Carville told CNN this week. "But regardless of what happens, this Gaza thing is really tearing the Democratic Party, I don't want to say tearing apart, but it certainly, there are certainly divisions within the party, and a lot of people just don‘t like this," he said during the media appearance.

Fox News Politics: A very special prosecutor indeed

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's Happening?

- Trump pushes for dismissal of classified docs case

- Biden allegedly considered taking board seat on CCP linked company

- Schumer goes to Ukraine amid funding battle

Nathan Wade appears to have made far more visits to the neighborhood of Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis than previously admitted in court.

A Friday filing from the attorney of former President Trump claims to show at least 35 visits by Wade to Willis' neighborhood before he was hired as a key special prosecutor on the Trump case.

Wade testified last week that he did not visit Willis' condo more than 10 times before being hired in November 2021. Willis and Wade maintain that their relationship began in early 2022. But his phone appeared to be near Willis' address at late hours on some nights before he was hired, according to cell phone data.

Fox News Politics: Trump vows appeal

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's Happening?

- NY judge orders Trump to pay hundreds of millions, bars him from operating business…

- DA Fani Willis did not testify Friday after fiery courtroom appearance…

- Biden visits East Palestine, Ohio, more than a year later…

Former President Trump blasted "clubhouse politician" Judge Arthur Engoron Friday after he barred him from operating his business in New York for three years and fined him more than $350 million, defending the "great company" he built and telling Fox News Digital that the ruling is yet another example of Democrats "trying to stop" him, but that "they will not be successful."

Engoron handed down his ruling Friday after a months-long civil fraud trial beginning in October and stemming from New York Attorney General Letitia James' lawsuit alleging the former president inflated his assets and committed fraud.

Trump spoke exclusively to Fox News Digital shortly after Engoron's ruling was made public Friday afternoon.

"A crooked New York judge working with the very corrupt attorney general of New York State, who ran on the basis of ‘I will get trump’ before knowing me — before even knowing anything about me — just ruled that I have to pay a fine of $355 million based on absolutely nothing," Trump told Fox News Digital. "No victims. No damages. Great financial statements, with full disclaimer clauses, only success."

Fox News Politics: Judge and fury

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's Happening?

- Fulton County DA Fani Willis shocks in raucous courtroom testimony

- Date set for first Trump criminal trial

- Nearly half of Americans think Biden should be replaced as Dem nominee

Embattled Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis took the stand to testify against allegations she had an "improper" affair with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, which could derail her case against former President Donald Trump.

Willis was notably agitated and at points raised her voice during a raucous several hours of testimony. At one point, Willis held up a printed copy the allegations against her in both hands and turned to the judge yelling, "it is a lie!"

Willis also called defense attorney Ashleigh Merchan's interests "contrary to democracy."

Judge Scott McAfee presiding over the proceeding, called for a five-minute recess at one point. When court was back in session he told lawyers to stop "talking over each other" and cautioned Willis, saying: "We have to listen to the questions as asked. And if this happens again and again, I'm going to have no choice but to strike your testimony."

Willis is expected back on the stand Friday for further testimony.

Trump had his own courtroom drama Thursday. He appeared in a Manhattan court for a pretrial hearing in the criminal "hush-money" case against him, where the judge set a date for the beginning of the first trial on criminal charges.

The trial is set to start March 25, a few weeks after Super Tuesday but before the end of the GOP primary.

Trump said he would be campaigning in the evening after attending the trial. "I'll be here during the day and I'll be campaigning during the night. Biden should be doing the same thing but he’ll be sleeping," Trump said outside the courtroom.

Fox News Politics: Borderline impeachment

Welcome to Fox News’ Politics newsletter with the latest political news from Washington D.C. and updates from the 2024 campaign trail.

What's Happening?

- House Republican warns of serious national security threat related to space

- Mayorkas becomes first cabinet secretary to be impeached since the 19th century

- Democrat Tom Suozzi triumphs in special election to replace Santos

On the eve of Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was impeached in a historic vote over his mishandling of the illegal immigration crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. Three Republican lawmakers, Reps. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., Ken Buck, R-Colo., and Tom McClintock, R-Calif., jumped the aisle to vote against the impeachment.

The 214-213 vote came after the first impeachment failed earlier this month. Every House Democrat showed up to protect the cabinet secretary, including Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, who temporarily left the hospital where he was recovering from surgery to cast his vote. Once Rep. Steve Scalise returned to D.C. from a cancer treatment, the GOP had the numbers to advance the articles of impeachment.

House Republicans have accused Mayorkas of violating his oath to defend the U.S. by failing to secure the border and "refusing" to enforce immigration laws.

The three Republicans who voted against impeachment on Tuesday have criticized Mayorkas' handling of the border but expressed reservations over whether it rose to the level of impeachment. McClintock warned it could set a precedent for political impeachments that could harm Republican officials in the future.

This is the first time a Cabinet secretary has been impeached by the U.S. Congress since 1876.

It's now up to the Senate — where Democrats run the show — to hold an impeachment trial.
