Barr had said the US attorney in New Jersey, a Trump ally, would fill the role in an acting capacity.On NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, House intelligence chair Adam Schiff was asked if he accepted the reported explanation that Trump’s move to replace Berman with Clayton was “simply the president wanting to do a favor for a golfing buddy”.“I can’t accept that explanation,” Schiff said, “given the pattern and practice of both the president in seeking to use the justice system to reward friends, punish enemies, protect people he likes, and Bill Barr’s willingness to carry that water for the president.“Also, if you look at Berman’s statement, Berman apparently has the same skepticism. There’s a reason … he was saying ‘I’m not stepping down,’ that he wanted to ensure that these investigations continued … Berman clearly had a concern about why he was being pushed out.”Clayton’s firm, Sullivan & Cromwell, has represented Deutsche Bank, one of Trump’s largest creditors which is itself under investigation by the DoJ. On Sunday Republican senator Tim Scott told ABC’s This Week: “There is no indication that those investigations will stop.”Democrats have long claimed Barr acts more as a personal lawyer for Trump than the impartial chief of federal law enforcement. I fully expect that the office will continue to handle all cases in the normal course.”Bharara said he thought Barr’s conduct “shows there is an unfitness for office”.

House Intelligence Chair Adam Schiff said Sunday he hopes the ousted U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York testifies before Congress, saying his removal revealed a mismanagement of the Justice Department.

U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman stepped down from his position Saturday after getting into a public stand-off with Attorney General William Barr, who had previously stated that Berman had resigned, to Berman’s apparent surprise. Barr's call for his departure was seen as a major interference in the prosecutor's office.

Barr did not give a reason for Berman removal, but many felt it sent a sign that President Donald Trump would not hesitate to purge those who weren't totally loyal to him. Berman’s office has investigated Trump and his associates.

Schiff (D-Calif.) said Sunday: "I certainly hope that [Berman] will come and testify before Congress."

It's "the most disastrous management of the Justice Department in modern memory," Schiff told host Chuck Todd on NBC’s “Meet The Press.“ "And like so much of what we have seen in this administration, it doesn't come as a surprise anymore, but yet it's completely demoralizing to the people in the department and dangerous to the rule of law."

House Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler has already announced his intention to investigate the matter, but the New York Democrat dismissed the idea of launching an impeachment investigation against Barr, saying it would be a "waste of time" due to the Senate majority in the Senate.

House Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler said Sunday all Senate Republicans who voted to acquit President Donald Trump during his impeachment trial were "corrupt."

Speaking with CNN's Jake Tapper on “State of the Union,“ Nadler repeatedly called Senate Republicans corrupt for failing to remove the president and investigate allegations of malfeasance. His remarks came after Attorney General William Barr dramatically ousted U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman, who was heading investigations into Trump and his allies, and after former national security adviser John Bolton offered damning new allegations about the president in his soon-to-be released book.

Tapper asked if Nadler agreed with calls to impeach Barr, and the New York Democrat responded tersely that to do so would be a waste of time.

"We have a corrupt Republican majority in the Senate, which will not consider impeachment no matter what the evidence and no matter what the facts," Nadler said.

During Trump's January impeachment trial, Senate Republicans voted largely on party lines to acquit the president of obstructing Congress and abusing his power. (Utah Sen. Mitt Romney voted to convict Trump on one count.)

When Tapper asked if Nadler considered all Republicans who voted to acquit Trump corrupt, the congressman replied: "I think in the sense of being corrupt against the interest of the country, yes."

Nadler also laid into Senate Republicans for not summoning Bolton to testify about his experiences in the White House following his unceremonious ouster in September. Leaked excerpts of Bolton's book allege the president's behavior that led to his articles of impeachment were merely part of a pattern of corrupt behavior. Bolton argued that had House Democrats focused on the president's dealings with numerous foreign leaders, the impeachment effort could have gone differently.

Bolton was widely panned for refusing to testify before Congress, with critics saying he saved details to promote book sales. The Trump administration has tried to stop the release of his book, claiming Bolton disclosed classified information.

"He refused to testify before the House," Nadler said. "And the Senate, of course, was never going to call him because the Senate Republicans were not interested in any evidence. As I said, they were corrupt in that respect."
